🇺🇸 The Forgotten Holiday 🇺🇸
For many Americans, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer — a long weekend filled with travel, cookouts, and time with family.
But for others, it is a painful reminder of a folded flag, a knock at the door, and a loved one who never came home.
Memorial Day is not about celebration.
It is about remembrance.
From Bunker Hill, Gettysburg, and the Alamo…
To Iwo Jima, Normandy, Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan…
Generation after generation, America’s sons and daughters willingly stepped forward — prepared to shed their blood and lay down their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Today, we remember the folded flags handed to grieving families, the endless rows of white headstones standing in silence at Arlington, the riderless horse and caisson carrying America’s fallen heroes to their final resting place, and the thunder of the missing man formation breaking across the sky. We remember the empty seats at dinner tables, the birthdays missed, the children raised without a parent, and the families forever changed by the cost of freedom. Behind every name etched in stone was a son, a daughter, a husband, a wife, a father, a mother, or a friend who willingly laid down their life so that others could live free.
The folding of the American flag is not simply ceremony — it is a symbol of honor, sacrifice, faith, and remembrance.
1️⃣ First Fold — A symbol of life.
2️⃣ Second Fold — A symbol of belief in eternal life.
3️⃣ Third Fold — Honors the veterans who gave a portion of their lives in defense of our nation.
4️⃣ Fourth Fold — Represents our weaker nature and our trust in God.
5️⃣ Fifth Fold — A tribute to the United States of America.
6️⃣ Sixth Fold — Represents where our hearts lie in loyalty and devotion to our country.
7️⃣ Seventh Fold — Honors the Armed Forces who defend our nation against all enemies.
8️⃣ Eighth Fold — Dedicated to those who entered the valley of the shadow of death so others may live in peace and freedom.
9️⃣ Ninth Fold — Honors womanhood and the mothers who have given sons and daughters in service to this nation.
🔟 Tenth Fold — Honors the fathers who have also sacrificed their children for the defense of freedom.
1️⃣1️⃣ Eleventh Fold — Represents the Seal of King David and glorifies the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
1️⃣2️⃣ Twelfth Fold — Represents eternity and glorifies God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
1️⃣3️⃣ Thirteenth Fold — Completes the symbol of honor and remembrance. When fully folded, the flag resembles the tri-corner hat worn by the Patriots who fought for American independence.
Freedom has never been free.
From all of us at Wilson County Fire/EMS District 2, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of the men and women who gave everything for this country.
May we never forget the cost of our freedom.
