Sheriff Brian Craig and the members of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office continue to lift the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the family of Deputy Logan Utt, and all those affected by this tragic loss in our thoughts and prayers.

Deputy Utt’s dedication to serving his community and his ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten. His commitment to the people of Carroll County will be honored and remembered for generations to come.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office has shared a longstanding partnership and friendship with our neighboring agency, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. During this time of grief, our support remains unwavering, and we stand beside them as they navigate the difficult days ahead.

Today, members of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office joined law enforcement agencies from across the Commonwealth of Virginia in escorting Deputy Utt and his respects were felt in every mile.

As Deputy Utt’s family, friends, coworkers, and community continue to mourn, we respectfully ask that they be kept in your prayers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Effective immediately, the Floyd County countywide burn ban has been lifted.

Residents are reminded to continue using caution with any outdoor burning. Conditions can change quickly, and all burning should be done safely and responsibly.

Please also remember that any outdoor burning must still comply with all applicable state laws, local ordinances, and safety requirements.

Our office is currently working the theft of a 1984 Ford tractor 1920 model (pictured). This tractor and the bush hog was stolen from the Willis Gap community earlier this month. Our office has recovered the bush hog, but are still looking for the tractor. If you have any information on the whereabouts of this tractor, or any other pertinent information regarding the theft, please call our office at 276-694-3161, or Investigator Jason Kruse at 276-692-5123.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Brian Craig, would like to spotlight the exceptional achievement of two of our very own.

Investigator Breman Harris and Sergeant Greg Quesinberry, have both been dedicated to the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team (ERT) for 10 years, as of April 2026.

Both Inv. Harris and Sgt. Quesinberry have continued education and specialized training, since graduating their Basic SWAT training in 2016.

Inv. B. Harris has served a majority of his time on the ERT as a Team Leader and is a dedicated marksman as the assigned Sheriff’s Office sniper.

Sgt. G. Quesinberry has shown to be a true veteran in all scenarios and his experience is unmatched as our longest tenured ERT operator.

A sincere thank for your loyal services to this community.

**** 2026 Kids Fishing Day ****

The 2026 Kids Fishing Day was a huge success. We had over 100 anglers for this free event. Lots of trout were caught and the weather was perfect for fishing. We cannot thank our sponsors enough. They are the ones who make this event happen. We were able to give out 30 fishing poles and lots of tackle to these young anglers. Hotdogs and drinks were provided. Thank you to all who participated.
