$26M plan bringing Genesee County’s first state park to Chevy Commons

This is not one of Flushing’s parks, but nonetheless this is exciting news. Genesee county was the only county without a state park until yesterday when Governor Whitmer announced that our state’s 104th state park will be right in our neighboring Flint, MI!

https://www.mlive.com/news/flint/2021/07/26m-plan-bringing-genesee-countys-first-state-park-to-chevy-commons.html

Flint’s new state park will feature boat launches that connect to the Flint River, an amphitheater and other ways for residents to enjoy the outdoors, Whitmer said.

Here are some pictures to “Brighten” your day! A new look for Cornwell park. The DPW and former city manager Brad Barrett worked with Flushing Parks and Recreation for almost 2 years to get this project under way, and I must say... it was totally worth the effort. Thank you so much to everyone involved, enjoy safely!

It is truly wonderful seeing so many people using our wonderful parks here in Flushing. Being able to enjoy the natural beauty around us is incredibly important as we work through this unprecedented time. We are so glad all of you are able to enjoy our parks and trail systems, while respecting Covid-19 restrictions. As dedicated committee members and volunteers, we are ready to roll up our sleeves and get back to our normal spring clean up routine. We hope to be able to post a date soon so that you can safely join us for lots of fun and cohesive community activities like, pulling weeds, spreading mulch, gathering trash, and maybe even some playground equipment painting.

We also think this is a good time to share with you the process for improvements to the parks, which has been established through the City Ordinance.

We share a Parks & Recreation Committee and Safe Trail System Master Plan with Flushing Township and Flushing Schools. This is a collaborative plan that is updated every 5 years and details what specific projects or actions we plan to focus on during the 5 year period. Before we finalize the plan, we survey our city residents for input to help establish priorities. The City of Flushing Parks & Recreation Committee uses this plan as the basis for setting goals and fund raising. This plan can be found on the city website for your review.

Over the past few years we have tackled some of the larger projects having shown some amazing accomplishments, including the opening of Creekview Trail, removal of the Tucker pool, re-purposing the Tucker building, and pursuing relocation of a sledding hill.

Through the selflessness and hard work of many volunteers and your generous donations, we have dedicated some funding from the Trail of Terror for the renovation of the Tucker Building. The current plan is to provide space for the Teen Canteen, provide space for community meetings, and create educational displays and exhibits showcasing some of the incredible wildlife we have in the city. Additionally, we would like to eventually add a patio where the pool was located with picnic tables and easy access for recreational users of the river.

We started painting and cleaning the Tucker building last spring. While we had every intention of moving forward this spring, Covid 19 forced us to postpone any actions moving forward. We hope you will stay tuned as we work to plan ahead amidst these trying circumstances. In the meantime, we would like to announce that with the assistance of the former administration at city hall, the Flushing Parks & Recreation Committee has a pending grant application to the Flushing Fund of the Greater Flint Area Community Foundation. Once funding is received, the community will be engaged for their input and thoughts on the future of this asset to the community. This is just one of the many great things that has happened, and continues to happen, that makes our city a great place to live!

Though winter may not be everyone’s favorite time of year for outdoor activities, the beauty is unparalleled. Flushing’s Riverview Trail was alive with activity over the weekend. Juncos, sparrows, cardinals and other birds flitted through the bare branches seeming to pay no attention to the trail goers as we all enjoyed the beauty presented to us. Cross country skiers, folks walking their dogs, photographers, and even a small filming crew could be found braving the cold. Brisk but beautiful!

Keep Parks and Rec. in mind when you’re putting outdoor decorations away.

Are you still humming Christmas music?
Are you sad that people are unplugging their Christmas lights?
Have you ever procrastinated taking your tree down because you’re not ready for the holidays to be over?
If you answered yes to any of these questions.... we need you!!
Flushing Parks and Recreation is planning a holiday lights display for next year during the Candlewalk and we need to put together a planning committee full of holiday cheer. If you are interested in volunteering to plan and participate in the event set up next year please send us a message!!!

Everyone can do their part to help keep our city beautiful and healthy. Keep your eyes out for invasive species!

August is Tree Check Month! Our trees do so much for us that we owe it to them to see how they are holding up from time to time. Everyone should be on the lookout for signs of a particular invasive species that we absolutely do not want here in Michigan- the Asian Longhorned Beetle. It's favorite food is Maple trees of which over a BILLION grow in Michigan! It also feeds on many other types as well. So please, do your part and visit the site below for more information on what to look for and what you can do to help then get out there and check on your foliaged friends.

Please like and share!
