After nearly 20 years of planning and implementation, the REAL ID will be officially enforced on May 7, 2025. This means that the look of IDs you encounter may change soon!

The REAL ID Act set new and improved security standards for all U.S.-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards. While this will have a tremendous impact on reducing fraud and imposture, your challenge in the near future is ensuring your ability to recognize valid credentials and not refuse a notarization because you’re not familiar with them.

No state requires Notaries to only accept REAL ID-compliant IDs. But Notaries will encounter identity documents with unfamiliar designs, symbols and security features.
