Just as Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rocky Bleier was about to wrap up his rookie season in 1968, a teammate called him over to the table the team reserved for fan mail. The former Notre Dame standout was surprised. He was not a high NFL draft pick or a well-known player and, in a few months with the team, had yet to receive any letters of support.

When he opened the envelope, though, he realized that was still the case: In his hand was a notification that he had been drafted by the U.S. Army, which was immersed in the Vietnam War. He was due to report the next day. In combat the next year, he suffered grisly injuries that would reshape his life, but improbably, not nudge him off course.

The football player turned soldier turned injured veteran fought his way back to a professional football career that spanned more than a decade. In turn, he has used that story to inspire countless others not to yield in the most difficult circumstances, and he has donated time and energy to helping veterans like him reacclimate to the jarringly different lives they faced when they returned home.

In response to ongoing extreme heat conditions, Baldwin County, AL Commission is opening a Cooling Center in City of Foley Municipal Government that will be open for public use on Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m., until 8 p.m.

It will be located at St. Paul's Episcopal Church - Parish Hall at 506 N. Pine Street Foley, Alabama.

A Heat Advisory is in effect today for the entire area, with heat index values projected between 108 F - 112 F. The advisory extends into Tuesday, with an Excessive Heat Watch for coastal areas where heat index values may reach 110 F - 115 F.

For additional information about the Cooling Center, community members should call 251-256-8202.

Along with the Cooling Center, Sea Glass Initiative Inc. has hot weather supplies. Please contact them at 251-332-3442 if you are in need of assistance.

When people think of United Way, they may think of a big corporate entity, or worldwide initiatives. But that's not really the story. United Way of Baldwin County is the local connector. The bridge to the work. The real story is happening every day in the classrooms, shelters, food pantries, and counseling offices of the nonprofits we fund across this county.

That's why we are excited to invite you to our Annual Agency Tour on Wednesday, July 29. This is your chance to see, up close, where your support actually goes and to meet the staff and volunteers who show up for Baldwin County families every single day.

Here are the details:

Date: Wednesday, July 29
Departure: 8:30 am sharp
Location: United Way of Baldwin County, 700 N McKenzie St., Foley, AL 36535
Return: By noon

The bus will leave promptly at 8:30 am, so please plan to arrive a few minutes early. Space is limited and tickets are first come, first served, so I'd encourage you to reserve your spot soon. Please submit a separate ticket request for each person attending.

A couple of logistical notes: please park at the United Way office (the grass area is fine if the lot is full), and please avoid parking in the shopping center next door. If you're able to carpool with a friend or colleague, that helps us keep things simple for everyone.

I hope you'll join us. Our funded agencies are doing remarkable work, often quietly and without much recognition, and this tour is one small way we can help make sure they get seen. I can't wait to show you what your partnership makes possible.
