Ridley Township Board of Commissioners

Ridley Township Board of Commissioners Welcome to the official page for the Ridley Township Board of Commissioners. The population in 1870 was just over 1100 people.

Ridley Township was first settled in 1643 by the Swedes in what is now Tinicum Township. The name Ridley was first used in 1687 named by John Simcock, a large landowner for his village in Cheshire, England. Tinicum township left Ridley in 1790, and for the next 80 years, it was mostly farmland with some mills and quarry operations. A new railroad line, the Darby improvement came through in 1872, e

stablishing the towns of Eddystone, Ridley Park, Prospect Park, Norwood, Glenolden, and Rutledge. All of these towns left Ridley Township between 1887 and 1894. Ridley Township encompasses the following towns and communities, which are all part of the township, and are known by locals as Ridley, as they share the same taxes, school district, library, police department located in Folsom: Crum Lynne, Folsom, Holmes, Leedom, Milmont Park, Secane, Swarthmorewood, and Woodlyn. Ridley Township is in southeastern Delaware County, northeast of Chester and southeast of Media, the county seat. The borough of Rutledge is in the northern part of the township but is a separate municipality. The unincorporated communities of Folsom and Woodlyn occupy the central and western parts of the township, respectively.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for National Night Out last week.

Residents, families, and first responders filled the Municipal Building grounds for an evening of games, giveaways, music, and equipment displays.

We are grateful to the Ridley Township Police Department and our fire companies for their service to this community, and for taking the time to spend the evening with the residents they protect. Thank you also to the township staff and volunteers who made the event possible.

We look forward to seeing you next year.

The Board of Commissioners extends its sincere condolences to the family of Retired Captain Scott Willoughby. Captain Willoughby gave 31 years to the Ridley Township Police Department and spent his entire life in the community he protected. That kind of commitment shapes a township. We are grateful for it, and we are thinking of his family, his friends, and his fellow officers today.

What a Fourth of July in Leedom. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

The heat forced a change of plans, and the parade could not go on this year, but the community showed up and made the day one to remember anyway.

Special thanks to Commissioner Jeff Warwick for leading the charge and keeping the celebration on track when the plans had to shift. The bike decorating contest, flag raising, and Fourth of July ceremonies were a hit, and the Family Fun Picnic brought everyone together to close out the morning.

Thank you to our fellow Commissioners, Ridley Township Fire Co. #1, and the Ridley Township Police Department for keeping the day safe and running smoothly.

Thanks as well to Carli McCrea, Chris Wharton, and the Leedom Civic Association for the planning, flexibility, and heart that went into pulling this together.

And to every organization that participated, including The Scouts and the RHS Marching Band, thank you for the spirit you bring to our community.

We hope you had a safe and Happy Fourth. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

When Crozer-Chester Medical Center closed last year, the Township acted quickly to protect residents by contracting with Narberth Ambulance for Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency service. That coverage costs Ridley Township $650,000 a year.

Here is the concern. Five neighboring municipalities are using the ALS service our residents pay for, and they are contributing nothing toward the cost. That adds up to approximately $25,000 every month, carried entirely by Ridley Township taxpayers. More than 40 percent of Narberth Ambulance calls went to those surrounding communities.

Township Manager Joe Ryan has brought this issue forward publicly and is pressing for a fair resolution:

- Ridley residents should not be funding emergency coverage for other towns
- The municipalities using the service should reimburse the Township for the past year
- Residents deserve dependable ALS response without delays from units being sent out of the area

We thank Joe Ryan and the Board of Commissioners for their transparency and for advocating on behalf of every Ridley Township resident. We will continue to share updates as this progresses.
