RECENT RESPONSE | MAY 17, 2026 | 500 BLOCK N. D STREET, SAN BERNARDINO

Local 935 members serving with San Bernardino County Fire responded at 6:34 a.m. to a commercial structure fire involving a boarded, single-story building. The first engine arrived in less than four minutes and found heavy smoke and fire from the front of the structure.

Firefighters began with a transitional attack—reducing the main body of fire from outside before conditions allowed crews to move inside. Interior teams then conducted a primary search and located a deceased adult. We extend our condolences to the individual's family and loved ones.

Six engine companies, two truck companies, a medic squad, two battalion chiefs and additional investigation and public-information personnel responded. Crews contained the fire to the front portion of the building and completed knockdown in approximately 30 minutes. No firefighter injuries were reported.

This incident demonstrates why rapid arrival, sufficient staffing and multiple apparatus types matter: fire attack, search, ventilation, medical support, command and firefighter safety must occur together.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Vacant structures can contain unstable roofs, concealed openings and previous fire damage. Never enter one. Report smoke or suspected unauthorized activity promptly.

Our members arrived in four minutes to heavy smoke and fire from a residence. Crews searched for occupants, mounted an offensive attack, and supported interior operations with vertical ventilation. Thirty-nine personnel controlled the fire with no reported injuries.

RECENT RESPONSE | MARCH 28, 2026 | 1200 BLOCK W. BASELINE STREET, SAN BERNARDINO

Local 935 members serving with San Bernardino County Fire responded to a fully involved commercial building—identified as a boarded-up church—with fire extending through the roof.

Because the structure's integrity was compromised, firefighters used a defensive strategy and applied water from the exterior. Five engine companies, two truck companies and a medic squad worked with command, investigation and public-information personnel. Crews contained the fire to the building of origin and achieved knockdown in approximately 20 minutes. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

This response illustrates the different roles of an all-risk fire department: engines establish water supply and advance hose lines, truck companies provide elevated streams and specialized access, and medic squads support firefighter safety and emergency medical needs. Maintaining enough trained personnel and properly equipped apparatus is essential when several companies must work simultaneously.

MUTUAL AID SPOTLIGHT | APRIL 8, 2026 | ONTARIO

Local 935 members serving with San Bernardino County Fire recently assisted Ontario Fire Department at a commercial structure fire. Incidents like this show why California's mutual-aid system matters: when a complex emergency grows, neighboring agencies can quickly add personnel, apparatus and specialized capability—regardless of jurisdiction.

Reliable regional response depends on adequate daily staffing, well-maintained equipment and the capacity to send help without leaving communities uncovered. Investments in firefighters, stations and apparatus strengthen the entire mutual-aid network.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Keep fire lanes and hydrants clear, and make sure commercial alarms and fire-protection systems are inspected and maintained.

RECENT RESPONSE | APRIL 9, 2026 | ORANGE SHOW ROAD RIVER BOTTOM, SAN BERNARDINO

Our members arrived at a reported vegetation fire and discovered two separate fires burning in the river bottom. One was controlled quickly; the second required additional resources from San Bernardino County Fire and cooperating agencies. Crews held the larger fire to approximately one acre despite discarded tires adding heat, smoke and a difficult fuel load.

Engine companies used hose lines supplied through yard hydrants at a nearby business. That adaptable water-supply solution illustrates why firefighters must understand the hydrants, access points and hazards throughout their response areas before an incident occurs. Reliable staffing and mutual aid allowed crews to manage two fire areas while protecting nearby property.

WILDFIRE SAFETY: Never discard smoking materials into vegetation. Report smoke immediately and keep access to hydrants and fire lanes clear.

LAST MONTH'S RESPONSE | JULY 17, 2026 | GLEN HELEN ROAD AND FOREST LANE, DEVORE

On July 17, San Bernardino County Fire assisted CAL FIRE BDU and the San Bernardino National Forest at the Helen Incident, a vegetation fire burning near the railroad tracks in the Devore area. Cooperating crews stopped the fire's forward rate of spread.

Wildland incidents near transportation corridors can require simultaneous fire attack, access coordination, exposure protection, traffic and rail awareness, water supply and resource staging. California's mutual-aid system allows local, state and federal agencies to combine personnel and equipment quickly, regardless of jurisdiction.

Mutual aid is strongest when every participating agency has enough trained firefighters, dependable apparatus and operational depth to send resources while continuing to protect its home communities. Local 935 supports sustained investment in staffing, Type 3 engines, hand crews, communications, stations and the equipment our members need for year-round wildland response.

This post documents the July 17 response and is not a current incident alert.

WILDFIRE SAFETY: Maintain defensible space, remove dry vegetation and combustible debris, avoid activities that can create sparks, and report smoke early from a safe location.

RECENT RESPONSE | APRIL 10, 2026 | 1100 BLOCK S. TIPPECANOE AVENUE, SAN BERNARDINO

Our members responded to a fire deep inside a large pile of recyclable material within an industrial building. The automatic sprinkler system held the fire in check until crews arrived. Firefighters advanced hose lines through heavy fuel loads and limited visibility, then spent hours opening the pile and extinguishing hidden hot spots with assistance from company-operated heavy equipment.

Five engine companies and two truck companies handled the suppression and extensive overhaul, supported by a battalion chief, safety officer, investigator and other personnel. Engines bring water, hose and fire-attack capability; truck companies provide ladders, forcible-entry tools, ventilation and specialized support. Complex commercial fires require both—and enough members to operate them safely.

SAFETY: Keep fire lanes, hydrants and sprinkler connections clear, and ensure alarm and sprinkler systems receive required inspection and maintenance.

RECENT RESPONSE | APRIL 15, 2026 | 2400 BLOCK N. MOUNTAIN VIEW AVENUE, SAN BERNARDINO

Our members responded to a residential structure fire after all occupants had evacuated. During the response, firefighters located and rescued the family dog, which remained trapped inside the kitchen. Three adults and one child were displaced and received assistance from the American Red Cross.

A complete response requires more than extinguishing flames. Members must conduct searches, protect exposures, establish water supply, provide medical support and account for occupants and pets—often simultaneously. Adequate staffing allows those essential functions to begin quickly.

SAFETY: Practice a home escape plan, meet at a designated location and never re-enter a burning building for a pet. Tell arriving firefighters where the animal was last seen.

RECENT INCIDENT | AUGUST 26, 2026 | 2600 BLOCK OF NORTH SIERRA WAY, SAN BERNARDINO

Last night at approximately 9:49 p.m., Local 935 members responded to a residential structure fire at a single-story, boarded-up home in the City of San Bernardino.

The first engine reported fire burning beneath the building in the crawl space below the floor. Crews forced entry through multiple openings to reach the concealed fire while operating in a smoke-filled interior. Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras carried with their breathing apparatus to identify heat beneath the floor and locate the seat of the fire. One of those cameras can be seen in the video.

The building was unoccupied. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. We appreciate the San Bernardino Police Department for assisting at the scene.

Boarded and abandoned buildings pose serious hazards for occupants, neighbors and responders. A boarded structure cannot be assumed vacant. People may enter and live inside, while accumulated trash and other combustible materials can increase the fire load, fire intensity and smoke conditions.

Repeated fires can further weaken floors, roofs and other structural components. Boarded openings also restrict access and egress, complicating fire attack and searches and increasing entrapment risk. Every response requires crews to treat occupancy as unknown, continuously evaluate conditions and balance rapid search with structural stability.

Our members and Fire District personnel work with the responsible agencies in each city or unincorporated jurisdiction after a fire to address dangerous structures through applicable local ordinances and abatement processes. Depending on conditions and legal authority, that may include securing, clearing or demolishing a hazardous building so it does not continue to endanger the neighborhood and responders.

Training, forcible-entry tools, breathing apparatus and thermal imaging technology help firefighters find hidden heat, choose safer access points and bring these incidents under control.

SAFETY: Never enter a vacant or boarded structure. Report smoke, fire or signs of unlawful entry immediately, and keep access routes clear for emergency apparatus.

SIMBA’S SAFE RETURN | AUGUST 11, 2026 | SAN BERNARDINO

Meet Simba, a cat who may have used up at least one of his nine lives.

According to Cats of San Bernardino, Simba had been stuck high in a tree for two days during temperatures above 100 degrees and was becoming weak. Their team climbed onto the roof of a nearby apartment building and spent nearly two hours trying different poles and attachments, but they could not reach him safely.

They went to a San Bernardino County Fire station and asked whether help might be possible. A captain evaluated the situation and began making calls. Within minutes, a ladder truck arrived. The crew developed a safe plan, extended the aerial ladder over the apartment building, and firefighter Kolby climbed up to reach Simba. He was brought safely to the ground and reunited with his owner, who planned to take him to a veterinarian and keep his future adventures indoors.

A quick, friendly reality check: most healthy cats are talented climbers and usually find their own way down. A cat on a roof or in a tree does not automatically require an emergency response. In rare circumstances involving prolonged exposure, extreme heat, a weakening animal, or another immediate hazard, crews may evaluate whether safe assistance is appropriate and available without compromising emergency coverage.

This was one of those unusual circumstances, and we are glad Simba’s story had a happy ending.
