✨ The Heart Behind Habitat ✨

Meet Kim Freeman, Executive Director.

For the past 16 years, Kim Freeman has dedicated her career to helping families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. Her passion for Habitat for Humanity is deeply personal.

Growing up in a single-parent household with five siblings, Kim experienced housing instability firsthand. Those experiences shaped her understanding of how important a safe and stable home can be for a family. Today, she is honored to help others achieve the dream of homeownership and create opportunities for future generations. Helping families achieve the dream of homeownership is more than a job for her, it's personal.

When she's not at Habitat, Kim's favorite way to spend time is with her grandchildren. Family has always been the most important part of her life, and it is that same commitment to family that fuels her work every day.

Under Kim's leadership, Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity has experienced significant growth and impact. The organization was recognized as Rutherford County's 2024 Nonprofit of the Year and received the 2025 North Carolina Housing Finance Agency Community Impact Award for its revitalization efforts in Spindale. Through her vision, dedication, and commitment to serving others, Kim has helped strengthen partnerships, expand services, and make a lasting difference throughout the community.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to the incredible volunteers from Western Star 91 Masonic Lodge in Rutherfordton for donating their time, skills, and hard work to build a new storage area for the Habitat ReStore.

Because of your generosity and dedication, we’ll be able to safely store more donated materials, helping us better serve our community and support Habitat’s mission.

✨ The Heart Behind Habitat ✨

Meet Philip Dietrich, Office Manager.

Originally from Northwest Ohio, Philip has proudly called North Carolina home since 1992. After retiring in 2020 from a career in engineering and supply chain management, he was looking for a way to give back to his community and found that opportunity through Habitat for Humanity.

Philip first joined Habitat in 2021 at the ReStore before transitioning to the Affiliate Office, where he now serves as Office Manager.

As Office Manager, Philip is passionate about helping the staff, volunteers and clients be successful. Philip oversees many of the day-to-day operations that keep the Habitat office running smoothly. From HR and payroll to IT and safety, he helps ensure the organization can effectively serve families in our community.

Service has always been an integral part of Philip’s life. Throughout the years, he has dedicated his time to numerous community organizations as a youth baseball coach, student mentor, hospital volunteer, church volunteer, and most recently with Volunteer Rutherford.

When he's not at Habitat, Philip enjoys spending time with his family, of whom he is very proud, along with remodeling homes, fishing, hiking, and traveling.

We are honored to receive a heartfelt thank you from Chimney Rock Village for the public restroom facility that is now open and serving residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

While homebuilding is often what people associate with Habitat for Humanity, our mission is about much more than constructing houses. Habitat seeks to put God's love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

Following Hurricane Helene, the need in Chimney Rock Village extended beyond housing. We were grateful for the opportunity to partner with local leaders and volunteers to help meet that need.

Seeing these facilities open and available for everyone who lives, works, and visits the village is a reminder that strong communities are built in many different ways. We are thankful for the trust placed in us and proud to have played a small role in supporting Chimney Rock's continued recovery.

Thank you, Chimney Rock Village, for your kind words. Together, we continue building hope and strengthening communities.
