Harford County Amateur Radio ARES • RACES We are a group of volunteer Amateur Radio operators who provide emergency, backup and supplemental communication services to the citizens of Harford County

We are a group of amateur radio operators who have volunteered to provide emergency, backup, and supplemental communication services to the citizens of Harford County. We operate under both ARES and RACES:

ARES is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL). ARES can provide emergency communications support and public service communications to nonprofit organiz

ations outside the emergency services field. For example, Harford County ARES has, for a number of years, provided communications support to the March of Dimes Walk for Babies in Forest Hill. RACES operates under the direction of the Harford County Dept. of Emergency Services (DES). RACES is a governmental function and, once activated, RACES members become temporary unpaid Harford County employees for the duration of their activation period. RACES can only be activated by the Harford County Emergency Manager or his/her designate.

Becoming a Spotter

You must be at least 18 years old, be able to observe weather (though no instruments are required), and have access to a telephone or be an amateur radio operator so you can relay your reports.

Note: You do not have to be an amateur radio operator to be a SKYWARN SPOTTER.

You also must take a SKYWARN class which is a free, informative, fun filled 2 hour seminar that teaches you the basics of how SKYWARN operates, how to spot and report severe weather. After completing the class, you will receive a spotter ID number. All SKYWARN Spotter Training Courses are free and are held in the Spring and Fall.

We are currently only offering webinars due to safety and health concerns, but we hope to eventually return to being able to offer in person training at various sites through the 34 county Mount Holly Forecast Coverage Area within most of New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, Eastern Maryland and Delaware.

Harford County, Maryland Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), under club call sign KC3FHC, participated in the annual ARRL Field Day on June 26 to 27, 2021.

577 QSO’s, 3018 points

18 people attended, 15 of which were Amateur Radio Operators. We had 2 HF stations plus one Get On the Air station, Richard/KC3GTO. We received extra points for 100% emergency power, public location, information table, 10 formal messages via Winlink HF email, ARRL Radiogram to MDC Section Manager via Winlink HF email, W1AW field day message, education activity, social media, GOTA station and entry submitted vial web. Final tally was 577 QSO’s with 3018 points.

Dixon K3WNS, Rex KC3REX, Richard KC3GTO, and Ted W3YR each provided HF stations, computers, antennas, dining fly, table and chairs. Rex brought the solar panels and Dixon and Ted brought the generators. Alex KC3LOY brought a dining fly, table and chairs for the information table.

We totalled 577 QSO’s which is pretty darn good, and there were three walkin’s that were interested in ARES/RACES which is more important. The ARRL MDC Section Manager, Marty Pittenger, visited us, thanked us for our participation, and provided a Field Day Pin, decal, and patch.

Future plans include:

- DSTAR/ALLSTAR/C4FM 440 repeater
- Winlink RMS gateway
-Harford County Hospital 440 Digital Net

About Field Day
"Field Day is ham radio's open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio."
