I believe we need a more sustainable approach to logging, I believe we can still log, but in a way that benefits the environment. Currently, logging around old growth forests creates a problem in which a tree farm could avoid, such a tree farm being in the plains away from greater growth areas. I believe this approach, moving logging operations, could greatly reduce the impact on carbon emissions and create a carbon absorption area, in addition to benefitting old growth habitat and the wildlife it supports. I explain my reasoning below.
Mycelium transfers carbon between plant roots of different plants.
Cutting a tree creates a carbon straw, releasing carbon from that plant and other plants around it.
The bigger the tree the more mycelium connections and the greater the impact in carbon emissions
leaves use carbon in atmosphere to deal with oxygen byproduct of ATP production during photosynthesis.
By cutting a tree, you take away our carbon filter and replace it with carbon emitting straws, capable of emitting carbon from all plants connected to the plant’s root. Therefore, it is beneficial to log far from old growth habitats.
