Good Afternoon everyone! We hope everyone is enjoying the sunny weather. We want to address some misinformation being spread around. This upcoming Tuesday 5/19 at 4:30pm we are having our monthly Fire Commisioner meeting which is open to the public. However, this is not a meeting about County Code Enforcement nor is this a County presentation. This meeting is strictly about Fire Department business. Any further questions about this can be directed to our District Secretary Becky Hamlin, 360-640-9280.

🎗️ Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

Firefighting is more than a commitment — it comes with long-term risks that aren’t always visible. Cancer remains the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters, due in part to repeated exposure to carcinogens encountered during emergency response and training.

This month, we honor firefighters who have battled cancer, remember those we have lost, and reaffirm our commitment to protecting our health. Prevention, early detection, and awareness matter. Simple steps like proper PPE use, decontamination on scene, gear cleaning, retiring gear made with cancer-causing PFAS chemicals, and regular medical screenings can make a meaningful difference.

We’re grateful for the continued support of our community and for the dedication of our volunteers who serve despite these risks. Together, we can work toward a safer future for the fire service.

🔥 Chimney Fire Safety Reminders 🔥

Chimney fires are more common during the winter months when fireplaces and wood stoves are used more frequently. Taking a few simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of a chimney fire in your home.

• Have chimneys and flues inspected and cleaned annually by a qualified professional
• Burn only seasoned firewood and avoid using accelerants
• Never leave a fire unattended
• Watch for warning signs such as loud cracking sounds, dense smoke, or sparks from the chimney
• If a chimney fire is suspected, call 911 immediately

Stay warm AND safe at home this winter 🏠

Your Three Rivers Fire Department volunteers were dispatched, along with mutual aid from Forks Fire Department and Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, to a chimney fire at a residence in the Quillayute Prairie area on the evening of January 6, 2026. Operating in darkness with steady rain, gusting winds, and temperatures near 40°F, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from extending beyond the chimney by accessing the roof via ladders and extinguishing the fire.

Due to the absence of fire hydrants in the area, Tender 61 was dispatched alongside Engine 61 and Rescue 61 to provide a sustained water supply. Upon arrival, crews ensured the safety of any residents or bystanders on scene before initiating fire suppression.

Firefighters used specialized chimney fire suppression equipment that delivers an ultra-fine mist, reducing the risk of water damage to the residence. Thermal imaging cameras were also utilized to check for hidden hot spots or fire extension within concealed spaces. Following the incident, these volunteers returned to the station to reconfigure and resupply apparatus and equipment, ensuring readiness for subsequent emergencies.

We thank all responding agencies and our volunteers for their teamwork and professionalism under demanding conditions. Successful outcomes like this are made possible through thousands of cumulative volunteer hours annually dedicated to training and maintaining our equipment and apparatus.

🏠 Fire safety reminders related to chimney fires will be shared in a follow-up post.

Your Three Rivers Fire Department volunteers responded as mutual aid to Forks Ambulance, alongside the National Park Service, La Push Police Department, Quileute Fire Department, and Forks Fire Department, to a trauma incident at Rialto Beach on the evening of January 1, 2026. Despite inclement weather and challenging terrain, responders located an individual who had been injured in a driftwood-strewn area and had become immobilized.

Over several hours of coordinated effort, the patient was located, evaluated, stabilized, extricated, and transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation. Following the incident, our volunteers returned to the station and ensured that all equipment was ready for subsequent emergencies.

We thank all of our volunteers and other responding agencies for their teamwork and professionalism under demanding conditions. We also remind the public to use extra caution when recreating along the coast and to be prepared with appropriate clothing and supplies, especially during winter weather. In this incident, a long time had elapsed before the individual was discovered by other members of their group.
