It's a rare occasion when someone can witness their child willingly embrace the call to serve in the United States Army.
"When my son raised his right hand and took an oath to defend this country, it was a moment of pride that overwhelmed me both as a father and a soldier," said 1st Sgt. Kregg Chadwick. "Jonathan is a stellar straight-A student with the opportunity to choose any university he wanted, we were enroute to tour The Citadel when Jonathan, in a moment of unwavering determination, expressed his desire to enlist in the Army. Importantly, this decision was entirely his own, as I have never nudged him toward any specific branch of the military or pushed for him to serve."
When I asked about why he wanted to serve, Jonathan quickly stated, "I want to serve my country and be better than you, Dad." Upon returning home, we delved into discussions about the multifaceted nature of military service, both its merits and challenges. His commitment was evident in his eyes, even though he hadn't yet settled on a MOS. The only obstacle was that he was underweight, rendering him ineligible to enlist with his current BMI.
Undeterred, we discussed the importance of nutrition and exercise. Every day Jonathan would wake up early and go with me to the gym before school. After three months of hard work, Jonathan not only met but exceeded the weight requirement, gaining a total of 12 pounds in three months.
On November 13, 2023, Jonathan Chadwick proudly enlisted in the United States Army, choosing the MOS of an 89D Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist with the Airborne option. His mother, Jennifer, and I share in his excitement as he takes control of his future, demonstrating an admirable commitment to serving his country. Jonathan will attend Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson June 11, 2023.
