Defense Logistics Agency (DLA)

Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) The Defense Logistics Agency is the Nation’s Logistics Combat Support Agency.

As the nation’s combat logistics support agency, the Defense Logistics Agency manages the end-to-end global defense supply chain – from raw materials to end user disposition – for the five military services, 11 combatant commands, other federal, state and local agencies and partner and allied nations. DLA’s mission is to “deliver readiness and lethality to the Warfighter Always and support our nat

ion through quality, proactive global logistics.” To accomplish this mission, DLA has a staff of about 25,000 employees divided into multiple supply chains that contract for material and services across the military classes of supply, to include: subsistence (food/water), clothing and textiles, bulk petroleum and other energy products, construction material and equipment, personal demand items, medical material and equipment, and repair parts for land, sea and air systems. DLA Quick Facts: As a logistics integrator and acquisition/service provider:
- DLA procures items from manufacturers and suppliers and provides them to DoD and other federal/state customers, with services such as warehousing, packaging and transportation;
- DLA contracts for items that are shipped directly by the manufacturer to military units and installations;
- DLA disposes of excess military property through reutilization, resale and demilitarization programs. As DLA Director Lt. Gen. Mark Simerly says in Loglines, “DLA understands clearly that the homeland is more than a platform from which we project combat power or generate readiness — it is truly a theater of operations. One thing you can be sure of, no matter where U.S. forces are — at home or abroad — DLA is there to provide what they need, when and where they need it."

"There is no mathematical reason whatsoever why I should be here.”

Standing before the firefighters, paramedics and emergency responders who helped save his life, Stephen Dally used those words to describe the events of April 1.

Dally suffered cardiac arrest while at work at Defense Supply Center Richmond. Thanks to the rapid actions, training and teamwork of DLA Richmond Fire and Emergency Services personnel, he survived.

During a June 10 ceremony, responders were recognized with Life Saving Awards and Unit Citations for their efforts. From initiating CPR and administering lifesaving treatment to coordinating emergency response operations, every member of the team played a critical role in the successful outcome.

"It is a very, very honoring thing to know that when you reach out to those whom you know have your back, they come running," Dally said.

Join us in thanking the first responders who help keep the DLA workforce safe every day.

Did you know DLA has teams ready to deploy anywhere in the world within 72 hours?

When a natural disaster, humanitarian crisis or military operation demands immediate, on-the-ground support, the agency turns to its Rapid Deployment Teams.

These specialized civilian and military teams can deploy worldwide, providing on-the-ground logistics expertise wherever it's needed most.

Recently, a 13-member RDT deployed to Hawaii in support of Exercise Keen Edge, helping maintain 24-hour logistics support in parallel with the broader theater effort.

What can a K-9 team teach us about the future of artificial intelligence? 🐾

The answer might completely change how you think about human-machine collaboration in defense logistics.

Episode 2 of DLA's "Decision Advantage: The Human-AI Advantage" series explores why the future of AI isn't about replacing people. It's about building a smarter, faster partnership between human expertise and machine capability.

The DLA workforce is already putting this into action, and the results are accelerating mission readiness in ways worth understanding.

Before Teams calls and digital dashboards, , then the Defense Fuel Supply Center, teams were supporting the mission with fax machines, paper maps, and some seriously iconic jackets.

Long before today’s global energy mission, DLA Energy built a worldwide network of regional offices to support military operations around the globe.

By 1991, the center was overseeing eight regions, half outside the continental United States and half inside.

Today DLA Energy relies on four regions (Americas, Europe and Africa, Middle East, and Pacific) for the receipt, storage, quality assurance, inventory accountability, and distribution of product.
