What do you like most about your job and why?
Every day is different and there’s always something new to learn. There’s always requests for different part numbers or changes to materials or the revisions, outlining requirements. Sometimes its fixing mistakes or others to add new aspects to the purchase order. Its exciting to see ways to do things that I hadn’t learned before and to see the types of changes being made.

Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Office hosted a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. program featuring a keynote address from former DLA Director, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Darrell K. Williams Jan. 23.

“Not only is this a celebration of the legacy of one of the most respected and influential people in American history, it is, as always, a call to action,” Williams said.

He took the helm of the agency in 2017 as the 19th director and the first Black person to hold the position in its 60 years of existence. His tenure started with disaster relief response for hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and ended with the national response to COVID-19. In 2020, he retired after 37 years in the U.S. Army and is now president of Hampton University

“I applaud DLA Disposition Services for hosting this event,” Williams said. “The crowd is present, both in this room and online, and your commitment to simply upholding the Golden Rule and treating people with dignity and respect, as part of what Dr. King would have called ‘the beloved community.’”

DDXX in Afghanistan

Did you know that one way supported the Obama-era surge in was by establishing a second center in the country? DLA Distribution dispatched its expeditionary depot – DDXX – to Kandahar Airfield in Regional Command South so troops would not have to wait for supplies to travel halfway around the world. Deliveries began early 2011 and continued for six months, after which time transferred operations to a contractor. Because U.S. forces were building bases and outposts at the time, most items were Class IV.

CONGRATULATIONS TO KRISTEN HERSHBERGER

THE HQ PEER AWARD PROGRAM RECIPIENT FOR 1st QUARTER FY2023

Kristen is a team player and is always willing to go above and beyond to meet deadlines and provide extra support to J82 team members. During the past quarter, she has been a valuable asset not only to me as a new J82 employee learning the workload during fiscal year end but also in taking on additional responsibilities as we lost two team members that have not been replaced along with a third team member out on extended leave. In the past quarter, she completed the following tasks above and beyond her normal workload:

Completed consolidation of the FY22Q4 DLA DAR-Q response and submitted to OUSD prior to its due date

Wrote five Corrective Action Plans (CAP) that were unassigned due to the employee responsible leaving the agency or out on extended leave

Taught a new J82 employee the SOC 1 process and elevated any needs/issues

All the tasks mentioned above fall outside Kristen’s day to day responsibilities. She is willing to step in to provide help and training and complete tasks above her normal workload. We need more J8 employees like Kristen who are willing to go above and beyond to make the J8 organization a better place.
