Good morning. I wanted to share a message with you that I sent to my Soldiers. This message is very personal to me and hit home. Thanks to Katie Waters Burke for sending me this YouTube video today which sparked this message.
The word of the day is “grit.” In my early twenties, I was out of shape, lacked confidence, struggled to learn, and was socially awkward. Statistically, I was destined to “fail.”
How did I get to where I am today? Angela D. Duckworth said it well. Talking about predicting success at TED ED talk, she said, “it wasn’t social intelligence, it wasn’t good looks, physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It was grit.” What a powerful statement. I have friends and acquaintances who seemingly had it all, but they stopped progressing because they didn’t have grit. They just stopped.
You also have your own unique background and challenges. It is tempting to want to quit when things get uncomfortable. I was tempted to quit striving many times. Many of us want to blame life or God for our unique life circumstances. Yes, it may not be your fault, but it is your responsibility to do something about the lot you have been given. You and I often want to give up, especially whenever we compare ourselves with others. Yes, it seems that those with good looks, high fitness, and high IQs seemingly have life handed to them on a silver platter, but those gifts are good for temporary benefit. However, long-term success comes from not giving up. It comes from grit.
You can be competing against the genetically most “blessed” person in an ultramarathon, but if that person gives up halfway and you don’t, then you win!
Don’t give up. Have faith that if you put in the work with discipline and consistency that things will get better. I know that you can improve, because I did.
Recommit yourself to live your core values and long-term goals. This is why spirituality and attending some form of religious service is so important. They help center you on what matters most to you and help you to forgive and recommit yourself. They help you grit with gratitude through life.
For those of you who think this is impossible, I feel you. I have been through this. I know that it is hard and I understand to some extent the struggles of being seemingly a nobody. Don’t ever give up on your long-term goals. Remember why you chose to be where you are and choose grit.
From my gritty heart, I love you.
Know that you’re loved, and have a blessed day.
