We just learned they want to close the Fort Bragg Dog Park! If you do not want them to close the park please attend the meeting Wednesday, Oct. 7, 6-8 pm at the Redwood Senior Center Dining Room.
Date: 09/24/2015
To: Dog Park Community
From: City of Fort Bragg and Mendocino Coast Recreation and Park District
On Wednesday October 7, 6-8pm at the Redwood Senior Center Dining Room (490 North Harold Street, Fort Bragg, CA) there will be a community meeting to help plan the final phase of the C. V. Starr Community Center. As someone with an interest in parks and recreation (especially dog parks) in the community we wanted to let you know about this meeting so you and/or your fellow enthusiasts could come and participate. This will be an opportunity to provide input for what you think the final phase of the center should include (or not include).
As you may know, with an expanded community center there will come a need for additional parking, which originally had been planned to be located at the site where the dog park is now. It is likely that an expanded community center would need to use the dog park site as parking, as originally planned. While this obviously is not good news for the future of the dog park, it is not the intention of this project to put one form of recreation in opposition to another. We are hopeful that we can put our heads together and come up with a solution that works well for everyone. (Perhaps the new dog park on the new South Coast Trail will serve to replace the existing dog park?)
We encourage you to share this information with the dog park community and anyone else you think may be interested in this process. We are hoping to have as much public input as possible.
We’ve attached the flyer with more information about the meeting and shared additional information about the grant and planning process below.
Additional Information Regarding the Grant and Planning Process: The City of Fort Bragg was awarded $98,550 from the state Housing-Related Parks (HRP) Program. Grants are non-competitive and are awarded based on a formula that allocates funds for new affordable housing bedrooms built in the City over a program look-back period. Funds are to be used to create and renovate community park facilities. The City applied to use funds for two activities, (1) the CV Starr Phase 3 planning process to focus on a gymnasium; and (2) the Dana Gray Fields Major Rehabilitation Plan. Glass Architects has been hired to complete the C. V. Starr Community Center planning process and provide a comprehensive report incorporating community stakeholder input, conceptual design options, final design recommendations, and cost estimates. Glass Architects was involved with C.V. Starr Center design beginning in 1990, leading to 2009 completion of the C.V. Starr Center.
