I just heard that the Fort Bragg Dog Park will be closed for maintenance beginning March 21st 2016. The park will re-open on April 25th 2016. The dog park is located next to the C. V. Starr Community Center (300 S. Lincoln St., Fort Bragg). "The heavy use of the park requires periodic maintenance closures to aerate, add soil amendments and selectively re-seed areas to allow the turf to remain healthy. These maintenance activities and “resting” of the turf must be completed periodically to maintain the turf that was established as part of a dog park improvement project during 2014. While these periodic closures are recognized as inconvenient, they are necessary to maintain the park and turf grass in good condition. To the extent possible, these maintenance closures are scheduled as infrequently as possible to allow for maximum use of the park.

During the closure we encourage you to visit Fort Bragg’s new dog park located at the South Noyo Park Coastal Trail. You can access the new dog park through the Cypress Street entrance to the Coastal Trail."

You might also go to the Mendocino Dog Park off School Street behind the Mendocino Community Center, the off-leash beach at the mouth of Noyo Harbor or the Seaside off-leash Beach, just north of MacKerricher State Park.

Very Happy to share the news that the Fort Bragg Dog Park is no longer in danger of closing!!!

Subject: Community Meeting for Planning Phase 3 of C. V. Starr Community Center
A previous letter had been shared that indicated that the C. V. Starr Community Center dog park could possibly be repurposed as part of the final phase of the C. V. Starr Community Center.
However, after some research, it has been found that the final phase of the C. V. Starr Community Center will not require the dog park to be re-purposed and it shall remain a dog park.

We just learned they want to close the Fort Bragg Dog Park! If you do not want them to close the park please attend the meeting Wednesday, Oct. 7, 6-8 pm at the Redwood Senior Center Dining Room.

Date: 09/24/2015
To: Dog Park Community
From: City of Fort Bragg and Mendocino Coast Recreation and Park District

On Wednesday October 7, 6-8pm at the Redwood Senior Center Dining Room (490 North Harold Street, Fort Bragg, CA) there will be a community meeting to help plan the final phase of the C. V. Starr Community Center. As someone with an interest in parks and recreation (especially dog parks) in the community we wanted to let you know about this meeting so you and/or your fellow enthusiasts could come and participate. This will be an opportunity to provide input for what you think the final phase of the center should include (or not include).
As you may know, with an expanded community center there will come a need for additional parking, which originally had been planned to be located at the site where the dog park is now. It is likely that an expanded community center would need to use the dog park site as parking, as originally planned. While this obviously is not good news for the future of the dog park, it is not the intention of this project to put one form of recreation in opposition to another. We are hopeful that we can put our heads together and come up with a solution that works well for everyone. (Perhaps the new dog park on the new South Coast Trail will serve to replace the existing dog park?)
We encourage you to share this information with the dog park community and anyone else you think may be interested in this process. We are hoping to have as much public input as possible.
We’ve attached the flyer with more information about the meeting and shared additional information about the grant and planning process below.
Additional Information Regarding the Grant and Planning Process: The City of Fort Bragg was awarded $98,550 from the state Housing-Related Parks (HRP) Program. Grants are non-competitive and are awarded based on a formula that allocates funds for new affordable housing bedrooms built in the City over a program look-back period. Funds are to be used to create and renovate community park facilities. The City applied to use funds for two activities, (1) the CV Starr Phase 3 planning process to focus on a gymnasium; and (2) the Dana Gray Fields Major Rehabilitation Plan. Glass Architects has been hired to complete the C. V. Starr Community Center planning process and provide a comprehensive report incorporating community stakeholder input, conceptual design options, final design recommendations, and cost estimates. Glass Architects was involved with C.V. Starr Center design beginning in 1990, leading to 2009 completion of the C.V. Starr Center.

Most of you know the Paul Bunyan Days Dog Contests are not just for ugly dogs. So start planning your routine to show us how smart your dog is or creating a costume to show us what a snappy dresser they are or how much they look like their person. The contests this year are in the Fort Bragg Dog Park! And there will be rescue and animal related organizations on-hand to tell you about themselves. Last year there were no BIG Dogs or Disc/Frisbee Dogs entered, so if you have either please plan on participating.

Please come if you can and share if you've a mind. Advance registration suggested to save a spot.

Good News – last night Fort Bragg City Council approved creating a 1.5 acre fenced dog park on the GP Mill Site. Community Director Marie Jones added the park to a list of possible projects to be considered for the southern segment of the Coastal Trail; after a brief discussion it was unanimously approved by the Council. There is no reason to believe the modest funding will not be available but I want to let you know should the money be needed on another approved project it could drop off the list. Thanks to those who expressed their support in person and email; and a huge thank you to Marie Jones and the Fort Bragg City Council!

Just found out the City Council will consider establishment of a 1.5 acre off leash dog park on the south side of the Fort Bragg Coastal Trail TODAY, Monday March 30. This topic will be discussed at 8 pm at the Police Station's Conference room. It follows a special City Council meeting that starts at 3:00. which is about goal setting. You could attend to show your support or send emails in support to [email protected]
