Big thanks to Kelley House Museum for organizing this outing, and to Colton Thompson for these beautiful images. We had perfect weather for our walk up the Big River Haul Road, shielded from the wind, with gorgeous views of the estuary below and the trees above. Kelley House Museum Board member and docent Jane Tillis shared some of the early human and logging history of this now-protected area.
With support from hundreds of community members, MLT protected 7,334 acres of forest along Big River in 2002. The land was immediately transferred to CA State Parks, and is now part of the Mendocino Headlands State Park system.
The haul road trail is wide trail and an easy ramble, suitable for families, trail bikes, and motorized wheelchairs. There are plenty of informational signs along the way to help identify flora and fauna, and learn a bit more of the human and natural history of this remarkable area.

Mendocino Land Trust is delighted to welcome Karen Camille Bowers back to our Board of Trustees. Karen’s long experience with MLT first began when Heider Field was the extent of our portfolio - how we have grown! Karen was MLT’s Development Chair during the Navarro Point Preserve acquisition. She also worked on several Coastal Trail easements including Caspar Beach, Seaside Beach, the Westport Headlands, and MLT’s very first inland Conservation Easement — the Phillips/Corning property, 40 acres in the Commisky Creek watershed near Hopland. Karen helped steer MLT through the early stages of the Big River Estuary acquisition: 7,000 of forest along the Big River that was transferred to CA State Parks in 2002.

“Mendocino Land Trust's dedicated staff works to conserve and preserve the landscape that I love. I’ve been a supporter of CA Oak/Wildlife Foundation for decades. Conservation of our oak woodlands and habitat is dear to my heart. I am thrilled for the work that MLT is doing in the County’s interior! I am honored to (re)join this fabulous organization!”

Beyond her earlier work with MLT, Karen brings a wealth of government, community, and conservation experience to our Board. She served as the Community Relations Director for East Bay Regional Park District, and as the Land Use and Environmental Policy Analyst for an international law firm. Karen is an accomplished painter and artist, and is currently the President of the Artists Cooperative of Mendocino.
