What a great week the 69 had during their nights FTX. We worked on veterinarian care, weapons, radios, NVGs, CQB, MWD detection, and personnel discovery during hours of limited visibility. I am super happy with the progression all our teams made. Sadly this is my last FTX as the KM of Fort Carson. We have been holding this event every quarter for the last two years, and I can truly say it has evolved into something I couldn’t imagine. This was a team effort and this unit has set the example. A special shoutout goes to K-9 unit for affording us the opportunity to train at this amazing training site, which was absolutely perfect.

From 21-25 July 2025, the 69th went through Basic Decoy Development Program. This training program is designed to to educate and train handlers in foundational and advanced concepts of patrol dog development. The course integrates both classroom and practical application to ensure a well-rounded understanding of the principles of controlled aggression development. We can’t wait for to come back out in August for round 2.

Some sights of the week from the 69. On Wednesday, several Fort Carson medical units came down to the kennels to provide our handlers a CLS class while also receiving a K9 demonstration from our team. Thursday, few of our dog teams got the opportunity to train alongside the Colorado Springs’ EOD and ATF teams.

This post is a bittersweet moment for all the members of the 69 MP DET (MWD), 759th MP BN, 89th MP BDE, and the US Army MWD Program. Today we had to say our goodbyes and farewells to SSG Raven Beggs, who has been our tremendous MWD Plans NCO for the last 2 and a half years. The 69 would not have been as successful as it has been over these years without the outstanding leadership of SSG Beggs. She was a motherly figure and leader for our kennels each and everyday. She cared an extreme amount for her Soldiers and she always placed their needs first. She stood in as the Kennel Master for several months on end. She was a light to what could easily be a chaotic work environment. Thank you SSG Beggs for the impact you had on us and good luck in all your future endeavors.

Great training with great folks. Love the K9 relations built in the COS area.

Another great training day for the 69 MP DET (MWD). This training was the second iteration of our joint training conducted and developed by CSPD K9. This training brought together multiple K9 departments around Colorado and DoD Kennels. Training this week included various advanced bite scenarios that simulate real life situations, explosive/narcotics detection, and HME imprinting. We truly value the connections we have built with all our K9 counterparts in Colorado. This amount knowledge in one area only equals one thing, greater mission success for our teams.

The Kennels along with the 759th MP BN recognized Officer Kelly and Officer BJ for their efforts to orchestrate these great training events.

Today the 69 had to say their sad farewells to one of our tops NCOs, SGT Evan Tortorigi. SGT Tortorigi has been a staple and pillar of consistency, leadership, work ethic, and morale for the detachment for the last five years. We will sorely miss SGT Tortorigi and his positive energy he brought each and every day. We wish him and his family nothing but great luck and success in their next chapter of life! Once a war dog always a war dog! Thank you SGT Tortorigi!
