Still debating whether to register for the Four Corners workshop next week?

You won't want to miss this virtual keynote by Nikki Cooley!

“Navigating Turbulent Waters: Interpreting Challenging
Topics in the West”
Ms. Cooley will discuss her experience as a Diné woman who grew up in rural communities on the Diné lands and her path to becoming an Indigenous climate scientist and a strong advocate for protecting Mother Earth. She will discuss her experience in becoming the first Diné woman to receive her license to work as commercial river guide for over 13 years.

Bio: Nikki is of the Diné Nation and resides in Northern Arizona. Nikki received her Bachelor’s and Masters of Forestry (emphasis in ecological restoration and traditional ecological knowledge) from Northern Arizona University (NAU). For her undergraduate and master's studies, she has worked extensively with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina. In addition, she is the first Diné woman to receive a commercial river guide license to work on the Colorado River-Grand Canyon and San Juan River and was the first Native American President and Vice-President of the Grand Canyon River Guides Association (GCRG). She is passionate about advocating for and educating about protecting and preserving the environment and its resources. Nikki fluently speaks her Diné language and studies her culture and is committed to encouraging people to continue the path of holistic respect and knowledge toward the care of our relatives on Mother Earth and Father Sky.

Still haven't registered for the Four Corners Workshop? Why not?

Don't miss Dr. Jonathan Overpeck's Climate Change Keynote:

The Growing Southwest Water Crisis and Drought on the Colorado Plateau

Many current assessments of future climate and hydrologic change suggest that current drylands around the globe could become drier with continued anthropogenic climate change. In some “early warning” regions, such as the Southwest U.S. and its headwater regions, there is a clear observed trend in this direction. This is particularly true for the region’s rivers, where the nature of drought is shifting to a more temperature-dominated climate extreme. At the same time, however, some recent and influential scientific assessments suggest that temperature-driven drying could be compensated by precipitation increases with little net increase to water supply or ecosystem risk. A new approach integrating the examination of temperature, precipitation and drought risk indicate that river flows, sustainable water supplies, and ecosystems in the Southwest and its headwater regions are already being seriously affected by warming, and that continued warming will likely result in much larger impacts than widely thought, even if average precipitation increases. The implications of these findings have serious implications for terrestrial systems across all of North America, including regions with higher average precipitation.

Here's a description of what to expect:
"Americans love their public lands. Sublime scenery. Family fun. Rest and renewal. Nature. Heritage. But parks have also been sites of violence and exclusion. This address explores that darker history and considers how interpretation can engage communities to enhance democracy in some of America’s most beloved public spaces."
Don't miss out on this or any of our other exciting keynotes. Register today!

Hello Four Corners Community!

It was wonderful to connect with some of you at the national conference in Cleveland! For those who couldn't join us, we discussed various possibilities for future Four Corner Region Workshops - everything from do we want/need a workshop? to wanting an in-person workshop to maybe each state should plan a local workshop (but anyone/everyone is invited). We feel this is a big enough question that we'd love to hear from more people in our region so we ensure we are serving the best wishes and needs of our community.

So, we'd love to hear your thoughts via this short survey!
