Archive & Collections at FCMoD Archive and collections fun from Fort Collins Museum of Discovery! Check us out!

The Archive & Collections at Fort Collins Museum of Discovery bring the past the present and offer something to everyone! Whether visitors are writing a research paper on local history, interested in seeing what Old Town looked like 100 years ago, curious about fashions of the past, or keen on peeking in local yearbooks to see some great hairstyles, Archive & Collections at FCMoD are the sources f

or discovery! Our Collections Department houses and cares for approximately 38,000 objects – only a small percentage of which are on display at FCMoD any given time. Objects not on display are available for supervised, on-site research use by special appointment with our Collections Curator. Prominent among the Museum’s collections are stone objects from the Folsom-era Lindenmeier site and Clovis cultural complex; locally focused historic clothing and textiles; and household and personal artifacts dating from the mid-19th century. The Archive at FCMoD houses photographs, books, maps, newspapers, oral histories, and much more. No appointment is necessary to visit the Archive, but if you have specific questions contact the Archive staff prior to your visit so we can better assist you. Of particular interest is the Archive’s collection of photographs from the late 19th and early 20th century. Access to the Archive & Collections extensive digital resources is available through The Fort Collins History Connection, an online collaboration between the Poudre River Public Library District and FCMoD.

It has been more than 6 years since our very first FCMoD Archive & Collections post! We created this unique page at a time when the museum had many small social media accounts. These days, we want to tell the museum’s full story under as big a tent as possible. The idea is to enhance our shared experience and collective understanding of all the fun and important work we’re doing in the community.

Going forward, you will find the same great historical photography & storytelling (plus so much more!) over on the museum's main FB page at Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. Please join us - see you there!

Happy Leap Day! 🐸 We were intrigued by this proposal for a perpetual calendar that ran in the Fort Collins Weekly Courier in 1912. We don't quite understand it...maybe you do?

We are fortunate to have over a dozen volunteers in the Archive who work on various projects, from scanning to researching to filing to indexing to entering metadata to transcribing to...phew! They are busy making local historical resources more accessible to all of you!

One interesting project a volunteer has been working on lately is the identification of these contact sheets and 35mm negatives from the Triangle Review newspaper that was published in Fort Collins, Colorado from 1973 to the mid 1990s. He has been diligently searching through the newspaper articles to try to match up images so we have dates, names, and context for them. Another volunteer is then scanning the images to be uploaded to our Fort Collins History Connection database!

We have many of the historic registration dockets from Fort Collins Police Services here in the Archive, and they are fascinating to read. Here's an entry from September 23, 1907 in which Ellis Stevens was cited for spitting on the sidewalk in town. His $3 fine was waived, but he did have to pay $1.80 in court fees. 📖

Pictured is the 1940 yearbook photo for Virgil Thomas, the first African-American student to graduate from Fort Collins High School. In 2021, his family home at 308 Cherry Street was designated a Fort Collins Landmark.
