Every official trail here is built with a slope and shape that sends rain off to the side, on purpose. An unplanned trail skips that step. So when a heavy rainstorm hits, there's nothing stopping loose soil from washing straight downhill, and out here, that path often leads to Horsetooth Reservoir, the same water Larimer County relies on for drinking water.

It's easy to think of a trail as just dirt and gravel. Water doesn't see it that way. It just goes wherever the ground lets it. Staying on the trail is one of the simplest ways to protect what's downstream, including what comes out of the tap.

“One heavy rain can wash loose soil from an unauthorized trail straight into me. I’m part of the drinking water supply you depend on.”

By staying on designated trails, we can protect the plants, wildlife and landscapes that make these places special while supporting sustainable recreation for everyone.

Boat safe, boat sober. Larimer County Natural Resources is conducting heightened BUI enforcement at Horsetooth Reservoir this Saturday, August 29 to include BUI checkpoints and vessel safety inspections. Increased water patrols are designed to educate visitors, prevent accidents, and enforce state laws.
