Last week we conducted our annual exercise. A three day event where we did EVERYTHING. Well not quite everything, but our training department came up with an elaborate scenario including confined space entry, Level A suits, radiation, hazardous material sampling and a full decontamination line. Thanks to our partner services at Joint Base MDL, we had access to world class facilities to conduct our exercise in a realistic and challenging environment. Job well done to all involved.

Always nice to see the hard work of the Strike teams being showcased.

#ThrowbackThursday #OTD 2001 - President George W. Bush announced that a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle was laced with anthrax. This followed a number of other anthrax attacks in Florida and New York. The EPA requested Coast Guard assistance.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team deployed to Washington, D.C. Strike team members conducted entries into the affected areas, collected samples, and assisted in the cleanup of those areas, and coordinated entries into the U.S. Capitol, Hart Senate Building, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Government Printing Office, among others.

While U.S. Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team members were deployed to Florida, where their members took samples and provided decontamination stations at the American Media Inc. headquarters building and post offices in Boca Raton, Florida, the site of the first reported anthrax attack.

The Gulf Strike Team's training may look similar to ours because it is! We train the same so we can operate together seamlessly. The 3 strike teams work well and often together. Standard training is essential. The only difference between our training is location, and theirs is HOT! Level A suits in the south is no joke! Thanks for sharing GST!

A few photos of our trainees’ final exercise today. The team was instructed to sample multiple unknown substances and combat actively leaking equipment in a mock facility. All for training of course! See captions for additional details.
