Yesterday evening, May 29th, at 6:28 PM, Fort Dodge Fire was dispatched to the area of 1st Ave NW and 4th St NW for reports of a large fire in the area. Upon arrival, Car 2 identified a working structure fire at 424 1st Ave NW and called for an offensive attack. Engine 1 needed to lay 800 feet of 5’’ supply hose from the hydrant to the structure. A total of 3 attack lines were deployed for fire suppression. All searches of the structure were negative. A 2nd alarm was called which returned a total of 4 off-duty firefighters to the scene for additional assistance. Fire crews were on scene for approximately 3 hours for extensive overhaul of the structure.
The structure was believed to be a vacant residence. There were no injuries to be reported from the scene. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
A huge thank you to the Medic 1 crew for not only staying past their regular shift hours to assist fire crews on scene and handle medical calls during the incident, but they brought some snacks and refreshments to the scene for the firefighters to help with recovery.
Fort Dodge Fire was also assisted on scene by Fort Dodge Police and MidAmerica.

Our hearts are heavy this week as Chicago Fire Department lost Engineer Steven Decker, who passed away suddenly during a training exercise. This hits so very close to home for the Fort Dodge Fire Department family, as Steven was the father of Fort Dodge Firefighter Matt Decker. Please keep them in your thoughts at this very difficult time.

A press release from Chicago Fire Dept.:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 15, 2026

The Chicago Fire Department announces with deep sorrow the passing of Engineer Steven M. Decker who suffered a medical emergency Thursday during an annual equipment test shortly after 3 p.m. in the 6600 block of North Kedzie Avenue.

Engineer Decker was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where he later died.

"We are heartbroken by losing another one of our own. Steve gave everything in service to the people of Chicago and his courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Our deepest condolences go out to the Decker family, fellow firefighters and paramedics and all who cherished him," said CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.

Engineer Decker, who was 61, had nearly 30 years on the job and was assigned to Engine 71 in West Ridge.

Out of respect for the family, no additional personal information is being released at this time. The Chicago Fire Department asks that the media and public respect the privacy of his family during this difficult time.

We also want to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Francis Hospital and the Chicago and Evanston Police Departments for their assistance.

The store is open again. And will be open until May 28th!

By supporting Fort Dodge Firefighters Local 622, you help supply necessities that the city doesn't provide, like standard household items,; towels and wash cloths, pots and pans, silverware etc. It also purchases physical fitness equipment to ensure your Fort Dodge Firefighters are in great physical condition.

Beyond the station, we award multiple scholarships anually to local high school students. We also purchase coats for children who may otherwise not be able to get a warm coat in the winter time. And we purchase multiple bicycles and helmets during the Bikes for Tykes fundraiser every year. A classroom was sponsored at Rivers Edge Discovery center, as well as donations to multiple local charities throughout the year.

So, we'd like to say THANK YOU to all of you who support us! It is always appreciated!

Members of the Fort Dodge Fire Dept replaced Ol’ Glory on the River recently. This endeavor is a partnership with the Fort Dodge Fire Dept, Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight and funded by a group from the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility.
The inspiration and energy to create, fundraise and see this project through to fruition came from Ron Newsum in 2004. The Fort Dodge Fire Dept became involved in 2008 when Ron asked for assistance with the Dept’s boat and manpower to replace the flag and to do maintenance out in the Des Moines River on the pier that the flagpole is mounted on.
Since that time, firefighters have replaced the flag typically twice a year, in the spring and fall. Due to the wind and weather, even a high-quality flag is tattered and frayed after several months.
In addition, we have replaced hardware, the weight and the roller cable system. Sadly, Ron passed away in January, but his legacy of service with Ol’ Glory on the River and The Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight will continue.
In memory of Ron Newsum and to honor our Nation and its Veterans, we have every intention to proudly continue this tradition.
