Happy ! ❤️ On this day only a mere 59 years ago, the SCOTUS struck down laws prohibiting in*******al marriage.

In the court's majority opinion, Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote that "the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual, and cannot be infringed by the State.” It’s not poetry, but it paved the way for so many beautiful love stories for so many of you. Today, I celebrate with you.

Good morning!☀️

I have my first meeting of the Iowa State Workforce Development Board (SWDB) on Thursday. Yesterday, I had a brief introductory call with the chair, which was lovely. For this first meeting, I plan on introducing myself and taking in as much information as I can -- offering a POV when applicable.

I have some thoughts, but I'd love to hear what you think is important in regards to workforce needs here in Iowa.

From the website ( https://swdb.iowa.gov/ ):
The Iowa State Workforce Development Board (SWDB) oversees the development and implementation of the state workforce development plan. The duties of the Iowa Workforce Development Board include, but are not limited to, the following activities:
- The development and implementation of a 20-year comprehensive workforce development plan.
- The preparation of a five-year strategic plan.
- The development of evaluation methods.
- The establishment of guidelines for the awarding of grants.
- The review of grants awarded by Iowa Workforce Development.
- The recommendation of departmental usage of federal funding.
- The adoption of administrative rules recommended by the director of Iowa Workforce Development.

Congratulations to Rob Sand on selecting Dave Muhlbauer as his running mate for lieutenant governor.

I first met Dave at the Iowa State Association of Counties Spring Conference back in 2019, and over the years I've come to know him as a hard-working, honest, and genuinely good person.

As county supervisors, we've had opportunities to compare notes, share ideas, and occasionally seek each other's perspectives on challenging issues. What I've always appreciated about Dave is his willingness to talk with just about anyone if it means finding a solution and moving things forward. He cares deeply about the people he serves and approaches public service with a practical, common-sense mindset.

As a cattle farmer from western Iowa, Dave brings a perspective that doesn't always have a seat at the table. At the same time, I've found him more than willing to work across the aisle without losing sight of what he believes is best for his constituents.

Most of all, he's genuine. What you see is what you get.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from Dave as the campaign gets underway and wish both him and Rob the very best.

Still feeling yesterday's Frontier Days parade in my legs and back today, but it was worth every step. I walked the route twice - first as an elected official and then doubled back with our local Democrats to finish it out, handing out dog treats to our community canines.

Thank you to everyone who came out to wave, cheer, and visit along the route. I invited our City of Fort Dodge officials to join me this year (albeit late in the game), and I'm so glad Mayor Dave Flattery joined me and handed out candy to the kiddos.

The photo's a little blurry (it's actually a screenshot from Brooke Bickford's live coverage), but I kinda love that about it - it fits the energy of a busy, happy morning in downtown Fort Dodge.

“That night, I took time to thank God for seeing me through that day of days and prayed I would make it through D plus 1. And if, somehow, I managed to get home again, I promised God and myself that I would find a quiet piece of land someplace and spend the rest of my life in peace.”

- Major Richard “Dick” Winters, commander of Easy Company of the 2nd battalion, 506th parachute infantry regiment, part of the “Screaming Eagles” 101st Airborne Division.

Today, on this 82nd anniversary of D-Day, may we sit for a moment in quiet gratitude for the heroes who fought on that beach and in that country on June 6, 1944 so that we, then only the promise of a future generation, may live.

It was a beautiful morning for a parade!
Grateful for sunny skies and comfy sneaks as I walked downtown Fort Dodge for the Frontier Days Parade.

I made one round with FD Mayor Dave Flattery, then doubled back to walk with the Webster County Democrats. Instead of candy, I did my signature “give treats to all the dogs along the route.” I like to think our four-legged friends appreciated that (right, Brooke Bickford?!).

Speaking of four-legged friends, what a touching honor to have the lone horse for Ron Newsum. I very much miss that man.

Hope everyone had as much fun as I did. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I was talking with a friend today about our similar struggles and how while we're both very positive happy people, we do get frustrated sometimes. Tonight, as I was doing some work here at the home office, I was reminded of this scene from one of my favorite tv series.

May we all remember to lean on those true friends who get in the trenches with us. And may we then remember to jump in and assist when it's clear our friends need the same kind of help.

"Yeah, but I've been in here before, and I know the way out."

Have a good night.
