Here at the Fort Drum NCO Academy, there is a group of leaders and civilians who students rarely see. These teams of teams are working in a variety of areas such as operations, training, supply, weapons, logistics and administrative tasks.

Although these individuals may not interact directly with students very often, they clearly deserve recognition for their enormous contributions to the learning and training experience.

Working throughout the long days, these individuals help to maintain the upkeep, integrity and structure of our NCO Academy and our school house are “training ready.”

They also focus on making sure our training equipment, facilities and transportation vehicles are in working condition to provide safe and reliable experiences to our students and our cadre.

When we think of these extraordinary individuals, we are reminded of the importance of recognizing those who may not always receive praise directly from our students.

BLC Class 09-21 Lateral Appointed to CPL

Talent, knowledge, flexibility, and insight are all assets that leaders possess. Those who succeed in the face of adversity frequently attribute their success to a more powerful quality: tenacity.

It's no surprise: the demands of today's competitive environment test even the most experienced leaders. Setbacks are unavoidable in any enterprise. The new normal is a relentless succession of challenges. Some, on the other hand, are unsuited for it and pay a high price for it.

Your mindset is what you grow into. Mental creation always precedes physical creation. Who you are in your head is who you eventually become.

The most important thing to inspire people is painting a vision for them. A vision they feel emotionally connected to. Something worth fighting for, something to be proud of.

Every time you want to encourage your team, reconnect them with your common vision and purpose. Paint the big picture. Add meaning to their daily tasks.

As a leader, your position totally changes. It is not only about your performance anymore, your task is to bring out the best in every single of your team members.

For many leaders, this requires a complete mindset change from self-centered to team-centered. You need to start being interested in the people around you. Do you even know them? What are their dreams or troubles? What drives them? Can you answer these questions for your team?

“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go. But ought to be.”
— Rosalynn Carter

Start being curious about the people you work with. Listen more, speak less. Evaluate how efficient your one-to-one’s are. They are the best opportunity for you to be an incredible listener and learn.

If you want to be relevant in the future, you cannot afford to exclude valuable input from all ethnicities and genders, because diversity leads to the best results.

“Strength lies in differences. Not in similarities.”
— Stephen Covey

It is tough to be a leader; I know. But it is never too late to improve. We all start somewhere. Now is the time to evaluate your leadership skills and level up.

Last week the leadership of the Academy volunteered as test subjects for medical personnel becoming certified to perform Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA). Even though Commandant, Deputy Commandant, 1SG and Branch Chief were a bit scared to have needles in their ears, the procedure will keep them going for another 100,000 miles. #LeadTheClimb #mountaintough

Highlights of the newly issued General Order 1H.

“Lead The Climb”

Good afternoon! Many of you asked about a change in the mask wear policy on Fort Drum resulting from the new DoD policy. In concert with that DoD policy, fully vaccinated individuals, defined as those who are at least two weeks beyond their final dose, are no longer required to wear a mask indoors or outdoors on Fort Drum facilities, with a few exceptions.

In the following facilities, masks are still required, irrespective of vaccine status:

1. Child Development Centers to include School Aged Centers
2. Medical and dental facilities
3. Food preparation / dissemination areas; and
4. COVID-19 vaccination sites

For unvaccinated Soldiers, there is no change to mask policy on post.

DoD policy requires masks for unvaccinated personnel indoors on federal property. While off-post, DoD personnel should comply with updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and State of New York guidelines regarding areas where masks should be worn.

The intent is NOT to have “vaccine police” and start asking everyone their vaccination status, but rather to get back to some normalcy while trusting our Soldiers and community members to live up to the Army Values of integrity and respect. Soldiers who fail to comply with this policy are subject to punishment.
