DEC and the NYSDOH - New York State Health Department have issued an air quality health advisory for fine particulate matter TOMORROW, July 15th, for the Eastern Lake Ontario, Central New York and Western New York counties.

The forecast for tomorrow, July 15th, shows wildfires in northern Minnesota and Ontario are causing a plume of smoke that will be visible high in the atmosphere with levels of PM2.5 (particle pollution) forecast at ground level making it unhealthy for sensitive groups in the Eastern Lake Ontario, Central New York, and Western New York regions. The rest of the state will see moderate levels.

Air Quality Index (AQI) Health Guidelines are associated with recommendations to protect people. DEC carefully monitors air quality statewide and will keep you informed of any changes.

Sensitive groups should make outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Take more breaks, watch for symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath, and follow your health care provider's action plan.

Sensitive groups include children and teens, the elderly, pregnant people, those with lung or heart conditions, asthmatics, those who exercise or work outdoors, and those who live in disadvantaged communities.

For additional information you can contact the Air Quality Hotline: 1-800-535-1345.
