JBLE-Eustis Environmental Protecting Your Environment! The environmental program is managed by the Environmental Element of the Civil Engineer Division.

Our principal goal is to maintain an installation that takes a proactive approach to ensure long-term viability of the mission by reducing environmental environmental impacts and managing resources so they will be available for future use.

⚠️ PSA: FAWN SEASON IS HERE. SEE A FAWN IN YOUR YARD? GIVE IT SPACE.

Spring is the time when many Virginians enjoy seeing young animals in their yards and neighborhoods. It is also the time when parents are very protective of their young. Whether it's bird nestlings or a fawn using your backyard as a nursery, give them plenty of space and keep pets on a leash. You don't want a doe or hawk seeing you as a threat to their young.

In particular, deer can be very protective of their young and as a large animal can cause serious injury to those they see as a threat. As many deer find it safe to raise fawns in urban/suburban areas, it is important for residents to be aware of does with fawns in their yards, keep their distance, and to ensure pets are leashed and kept away from deer as much as possible.

There are reports every year of dogs being injured or killed by does with fawns.

Please help us spread the word. Link in the comments.

Noticed green scum or murky water in your neighborhood pond lately? It's likely algae — and while it's naturally occurring, excess nutrients can make it worse. The good news: what you do in your yard makes a difference. Here's how to help:

🌿 Keep leaves and grass clippings out of storm drains
🌿 Limit fertilizer use on your lawn
🌿 Don't feed the geese (yes, really — they produce 3 lbs of waste per day!)
🌿 Pick up pet waste - even in your own backyard!
🌿 Plant native buffers along the water's edge

DON’T FEED THE GEESE!
Help protect wildlife, water quality, and our shared spaces.
Feeding geese may seem kind, but it can cause serious problems – for the birds as well as for our waterways and neighborhoods. Human food disrupts their natural behaviors, harms their health and leads to overcrowding. By not feeding geese, you help protect local ecosystems while keeping community spaces cleaner and safer for everyone.

The Impact on Our Waterways:
Goose droppings wash into storm drains and local waterways.
Waste adds excess nutrients that fuel algae growth and poor water quality.
Polluted runoff can harm fish, wildlife, and recreation like swimming and boating.

Newport News residents, mark your calendars for upcoming hazardous waste collection dates!
