🚨 SEVERE WEATHER ADVICE Fort Gibson FIRE DEPARTMENT 🌪️
As we move into severe weather season, the Fort Gibson Fire Department wants to remind all residents: outdoor warning sirens are NOT designed to be heard indoors. They are meant to alert people who are outside.
⚠️ DO NOT rely on sirens as your primary warning system.
You must have multiple ways to receive alerts—especially while inside or sleeping.
⸻
Some tips from our friends at Muskogee Fire Dept:
🏠AT HOME
• Identify your safe place: an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows (bathroom, closet, hallway).
• Have more than one way to receive warnings (see apps below).
• Keep shoes, flashlight, and your phone nearby—especially overnight.
📱 RECOMMENDED WEATHER ALERT APPS
• Fort Gibson Hyper Reach (link in comments)
•NOAA Weather Radar Live
• The Weather Channel App
• AccuWeather
• Red Cross Emergency App
📢 Enable push notifications and volume alerts so warnings wake you up if needed.
⸻
🏚️ MOBILE HOMES & RVs
⚠️ These are NOT safe during tornadoes.
• Leave immediately if a warning is issued.
• Go to a sturdy building or designated storm shelter.
• If no shelter is available, lie flat in a low ditch (last resort) and cover your head.
⸻
đźš— IN YOUR VEHICLE
• Do NOT try to outrun a tornado unless you are certain you can escape safely.
• Avoid overpasses—they can become deadly wind tunnels.
• If possible, drive to the nearest sturdy shelter.
• If no shelter is available, get low in a ditch and cover your head.
⸻
🕳️ USING A CELLAR OR SAFE ROOM
Bring:
✔️ Flashlight & extra batteries
✔️ Weather radio or fully charged phone
✔️ Bottled water & non-perishable snacks
✔️ First aid kit
✔️ Blankets or helmets (head protection is critical)
✔️ Shoes (debris after storms is dangerous)
✔️ Medications & important documents (waterproof bag)
Let someone know where you are sheltering.
⸻
👨‍🚒 FINAL REMINDERS
• Sirens are an outdoor warning tool only—have backup alerts in place.
• Know the difference: Watch = be prepared | Warning = take action NOW.
• Have a plan for your family—including pets.
• Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those in mobile homes.
Stay weather aware, Fort Gibson. Preparedness
