Last week, the Zebus had a full and productive schedule of training, learning, and celebration!

🐮 Wednesday – Large Animal Medicine at Lazy JP Ranch
Our Soldiers received both didactic instruction and a live demonstration of essential large animal medical techniques. We reviewed where and how to administer medications, proper blood collection methods, deworming procedures, and safe animal-handling practices. This training strengthens our ability to operate alongside partner nations and enhances readiness in overseas and LSCO environments—especially when local food procurement becomes critical.

🔫 Thursday – Weapons Proficiency Training
We sharpened our lethality with a deep dive into the M4. Soldiers practiced disassembly, reassembly, clearing procedures, and functions checks before heading to the Engagement Skills Trainer to refine zeroing and marksmanship fundamentals. Always ready, always capable.

🏅 Friday – Recognizing Excellence
We closed out the week by celebrating two outstanding Soldiers—SGT Banda and CPT Tutino—who were awarded the Army Achievement Medal. Their hard work, professionalism, and dedication to the mission exemplify what it means to be a Zebu.

Proud of our team's drive, discipline, and commitment to excellence. Keep charging, Zebus! By the Horns! 🐂💪

🦃 ZEBUS TAKE THE TURKEY BOWL! 🏆

The 43rd MDVSS proudly joined the 9th Hospital Center for this year’s Turkey Bowl—and the Zebus brought home the championship trophy! 🏈🔥

Our Soldiers showed outstanding teamwork, competitive spirit, and determination throughout the games, representing the unit with pride. Even more meaningful than the win was the camaraderie shared on the field as we played alongside (and against!) our fellow units in some friendly Thanksgiving competition.

After the final whistle, we came together as a team to enjoy food, fellowship, and time to connect. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for the hard work, resilience, and family-like bond within our formation—and for the partners and sister units who help strengthen us every day.

Strong teams. Strong competition. Stronger Zebus.

Last Thursday, the Zebus had the opportunity to take part in land navigation training led and organized by our sister unit, the Veterinary Readiness Activity (VRA), Fort Cavazos.

Land navigation remains one of the Army’s most essential Soldier skills—whether technology fails, terrain changes, or missions shift, every Soldier must be able to navigate confidently using only a map, compass, and their training. This hands-on event strengthened those foundational skills while reinforcing the importance of precision, teamwork, and adaptability in the field.

We are grateful for the VRA’s partnership and for inviting us to participate. Working alongside our sister unit not only enhances our readiness, but also strengthens the collaboration and shared mission that define the Army Veterinary Corps.

Great training, great teamwork, and a great step forward in ensuring we’re ready for any environment. By the Horns! 🧭💪

Last week the Zebus conducted field training to enhance their operational readiness and technical proficiency.

Veterinarians and Animal Care Specialists practiced patient stabilization in a Role 2 environment and refined their ability to rapidly deploy, set up, and operate equipment in austere conditions — ensuring the detachment remains agile and capable in forward-deployed missions.

Food Inspection Specialists executed comprehensive food protection operations, including receipt and surveillance inspections, laboratory sample management, food defense assessments, and operational ration inspections. Working closely with the Veterinary Readiness Activity, they maintained the highest standards of food safety and public health support throughout the exercise.

Additionally, the Food Protection and Laboratory Team (FPLT) executed targeted destination monitoring and on-site surveillance of potable water and ice production to ensure safe subsistence support under expeditionary conditions. Their efforts reduce risk to the force and preserve combat effectiveness by maintaining secure, safe feeding and hydration across dispersed sustainment nodes.

The 43rd MDVSS remains committed to providing expert veterinary medical and food protection support to sustain the health, readiness, and lethality of the force in any operational environment.

Excellent work, Zebus — your hard work and expertise keep the force healthy, fed, and ready to fight! By the Horns! 🐾🇺🇸

Today, the Zebus held a Change of Responsibility ceremony as we bid farewell to SFC Puga and welcomed SFC Barajas.

The detachment sergeant is the lifeblood of the unit—responsible for training Soldiers, advising the commander, and ensuring the health and welfare of the formation.

SFC Puga has worked tirelessly to maintain the unit’s readiness and deployability. His steadfast leadership and dedication have built a strong foundation that will carry the Zebus forward. We thank you for your hard work and wish you all the best in your next assignment—you will truly be missed.

We are also excited to welcome SFC Barajas as our new detachment sergeant. Having already seen her hard work and leadership as our operations NCOIC, we look forward to the great things she will accomplish in this role.

This morning, Veterinary Readiness Activity–Fort Cavazos, Fort Cavazos Branch, hosted a team building and morale event at BLORA. Soldiers from the 43rd Medical Detachment, Veterinary Service Support, were invited to join in the training.

The event was planned and coordinated by the Fort Cavazos Branch, bringing together Soldiers from their veterinary center and food protection teams alongside members of the 43rd MDVSS headquarters and Veterinary Service Support Teams. Activities included paintball and small group challenges focused on leadership development and building team cohesion.

Among those participating were CW3 Abraham Montemayor, senior food safety officer for the 43rd MDVSS, and incoming detachment sergeant SFC Ruth Barajas, as well as CPT Holt, CPT Amador, and CPT Grazian from the Fort Cavazos Branch.

By strengthening relationships between units, this event reinforced the principles of Mission Command and supported readiness through trust, teamwork, and shared experience.
