The 566th Area Support Medical Company traces its lineage to Charlie Company, 61st Medical Battalion, Motorized, which was constituted on 7 August 1942 and activated on 25 September 1942 at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. The unit was active in World War II and as a part of the 61st Medical Battalion where it earned a streamer for Normandy (with arrowhead) and Northern France, the Meritorious Unit C
ommendation streamer embroidered EUROPE THEATER, and the French Croix de Duerre with Palm Streamer embroidered NORMANDY BEACHES. On 12 November 1945, the unit was inactivated while in France. The unit was revived again as part of the 61st Medical Battalion on 26 March 1963 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, after being allotted to the Regular Army twenty-five days prior. The company deployed with the battalion to Vietnam where it earned fourteen streamers from 1965-72, including the Meritorious Unit Commendation Streamer embroidered VIETNAM 1966-68. Another inactivation occurred on 18 February 1972 at Fort Lewis, Washington. The most recent reactivation occurred on 16 January 1993 at Fort Hood, Texas. Since the unit’s reactivation it has evolved into its present designation as the 566th Area Support Medical Company. Under the 566th guidon, the unit has participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom from March to September 2003 and again from March 2005 to February 2006. Since the beginning of the Iraq Campaign the 566th has earned the Presidential Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation – 2nd Award and the Global War on Terrorism – Iraq streamer. On 10 June 2011 566th ASMC began its first deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11-12. The unit recently redeployed from OEF 11-12 on 03 May 2012. The unit assumed Command and Control Response Element ALPHA C2CRE-A from 01 October 2013 to 30 September 2014. The unit assumed The Defense CBRN Response Force (DCRF) in support of homeland defense from 01 October 2014 until 30 June 2016.
