Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education Members (AEMs) enjoy unique professional development opportunities, including the Teacher Orientation Program (TOP) flights.

David Sheeran, an educator from the Indiana, Pa. School District, recently completed his TOP flight at a local airport under the guidance of an experienced CAP pilot. The program features a comprehensive pre-flight briefing on aircraft components and aerodynamics, followed by an interactive flight where participants can briefly take the controls from the front seat. This immersive experience helps educators bridge the gap between aviation principles and classroom STEM curriculum.

Pennsylvania Wing extends its gratitude to Pilot Lt. Col. Bill Mueller for piloting Mr. Sheeran's successful TOP flight.

Before you can fly solo, you need a Student Pilot Certificate.
This is your official permission from the FAA to begin real flight training. You MUST have it before your first solo flight.

This week, members of the Group Five Team are featured at the Center County Grange Fair.

The fair, which has been around for 152 years, is a home away from home for families. It is still the only tenting fair in the country, accommodating families in 1,000 tents and 1,500 RVs.
The Center County Grange Encampment and Fair in Center Hall, Pennsylvania, attracts over 200,000 people annually.

To be accepted into the fair is an honor, and to be placed in the military exhibitor row shows how our organization is perceived.
This is a great opportunity to promote our program, recruit new members, and meet people from all walks of life.

The fair runs from AUGUST 21 to 29; if you are in the area, stop in and see them!

U.S. Military Service Academy nominations are still open!

Applicants can apply to both Pennsylvania U.S. Senators and their individual regional U.S. Representative. The nomination deadlines for each congressional office are different, with some starting in September through October.

Cadets can apply for a U.S. Military Service Academy nomination through their U.S. Senators (U.S. Senate Website) or their local U.S. Representative (House.gov Locator). Nominations are required for West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy, but not the Coast Guard Academy.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy (New London, CT) uses a direct admissions process and does not require a congressional nomination.

Eligibility
Each applicant for a service academy nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission:
Age: At least 17 years old, but not yet 23 years old (age 25 for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy).
Citizenship: A U.S. citizen and a permanent resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Marital Status: Unmarried, not pregnant, and has no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
You should begin the application process as soon as possible by contacting the service academies of your choice.

This was an outstanding learning experience and possible career exploration opportunity!

Recently, members of the Cambria County Squadron (PA-258) and Brush Mountain Composite Squadron (PA-288) enjoyed a tour of the Lockheed Martin AeroParts facility in the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, area.

During their visit, they listened to a presentation about the company's extensive history of producing precision machining, component fabrication, and producing vital structural and mechanical parts for major defense aerospace programs. The members also received a special tour of the factory, where they observed parts of the C-130 and F-35 aircraft at various stages of the fabrication process.

It was a great way to learn about how an aircraft is made and how our local community plays a part in our national defense.
Special Thanks go out to Mr. Patrick McCann of Lockheed Martin for his hospitality in providing the tour!

Pennsylvania State Rep. Jennifer Oโ€™Mara (D-165) took to the skies for an aerial tour with the Civil Air Patrol over her District.

Springfield, PA - State Representative Jennifer Oโ€™Mara, a Major in the Pennsylvania Wing Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Legislative Squadron, took to the skies on Friday, August 7, 2026, for an aerial tour of her legislative district. The flight provided Representative Oโ€™Mara with a unique perspective of the communities she represents while offering an opportunity to learn more about Civil Air Patrolโ€™s capabilities and its role in supporting communities throughout Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Wing participates in flying more than 1,817 hours in their 13 aircraft, including missions such as fire watch for DCNR Forestry and turkey counts for the Game Commission and orientation flights for Air Force ROTC, JROTC, and CAP cadets. Flying our 13 CAP planes are 98 pilots and aircrew. Saving taxpayers over $8,000,000 a year by providing critical volunteer hours across the Commonwealth.

In addition, Pennsylvania Wing CAP offers a challenging youth program that allows our future leaders of tomorrow to gain confidence, discipline, teamwork, and leadership experiences while participating in activities ranging from flight academies and encampments to emergency services exercises and national cadet special activities. Cadets are offered a wide range of career exploration opportunities throughout their time in the program, helping them discover potential career paths in fields such as the military, aviation, engineering, emergency management, healthcare, public safety, skilled trades, and business.

If you are interested in giving back to your community and helping to guide the next leaders of tomorrow, or are a youth aged 12 or older, visit a local unit to join. https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap-unit-locator
