The memories can still bring tears. Long-lost brothers, combat fire and the rejection of their fellow countrymen kept many Vietnam veterans in the shadows

About 420 riders, mostly from California’s High Desert area, but with some cruising in from as far as Texas and Idaho, met up at the Barstow Mall in Barstow at 7 am on Sat., March 19, 2016 for a safety check by the California Highway Patrol and Fort Irwin Safety Office. They then rolled out of Barstow on I-15, turned north onto Fort Irwin Road and moved on to Painted Rocks, National Training Center’s famous landmark, about 5 miles before the main entrance to the National Training Center.
Many riders were Vietnam vets, but others of a younger generation rode with them to celebrate and show their support the veterans of that era. Riders included Marines from 29 Palms Marine Corps base as well as the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow; Airmen from Edwards Air Force Base near Lancaster, California and Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas, as well as Soldiers and National Guardsmen from Los Angeles and Fort Irwin.
Waiting for them at Painted Rocks were other Vietnam War era vets, their family members, and friends. After being welcomed to commemorative event by the Fort Irwin garrison command, Col. Scott Taylor, the veterans were seated together for a commemorative photo. The honored veterans then boarded military vehicles for a motorcade to Fort Irwin’s main gate, where they were joined by other National Training Center Soldiers to be cheered on by the Fort Irwin community as they participated in a welcoming parade to Fort Irwin’s Army Field on Barstow Road.
