Happy Independence Day from the Fort Jones Fire Department!

As you gather with family and friends to celebrate this historic Fourth of July, we encourage everyone to do their part to keep our community safe.

If you're planning to use fireworks, please remember that only Safe and Sane fireworks are legal within the Town of Fort Jones. Follow these simple safety tips:

Keep a bucket of water or a charged garden hose nearby.
Use fireworks only in a clear area, away from dry grass and other combustible vegetation.
Light only one firework at a time, then move away quickly.
Never point or throw fireworks at people, animals, vehicles, or structures.
Children should always be closely supervised around fireworks.

Reminder: All fireworks, including Safe and Sane, are not legal in the unincorporated areas of Siskiyou County, and neighboring jurisdictions have varying restrictions. Please check your local municipality's regulations before lighting fireworks.

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, let's work together to make this a safe holiday for everyone.

This morning, Fire Chief Hess visited the ongoing fuels reduction project on the ridge east of Fort Jones at the invitation of the project team. The work is being completed through a CAL FIRE-funded grant administered by the Northern California Resource Center (NCRC) and is focused on creating a shaded fuel break along the ridgeline and improving defensible space around homes on the east side of town.

Current operations include mastication of brush and small vegetation to reduce hazardous fuel loading while retaining larger, healthy trees where appropriate. Projects like this help slow wildfire spread, improve firefighter access, and provide safer opportunities for suppression efforts should a fire threaten the community.

Residents may notice significant dust being generated by the equipment, which from town can sometimes resemble smoke. Please be aware that this is expected during operations. The work site is continuously monitored by personnel as they're working, and crews have water and fire suppression equipment on site to quickly address any fire starts should they occur.

We appreciate the partnership between NCRC, CAL FIRE, participating landowners, and everyone involved in helping make Fort Jones and the surrounding community more resilient to wildfire.
