Throwback Thursday

⚓ The Coast Guard Auxiliary Core Training (AUXCT) program has evolved from informal member instruction into a standardized professional curriculum designed to ensure readiness, safety, and accountability across the organization.

Originally focused almost entirely on mission-specific qualifications such as Boat Crew, Coxswain, and Vessel Examiner, early Auxiliary training relied heavily on mentorship and flotilla-level knowledge sharing. As the organization expanded and federal standards evolved, the need for consistent baseline training across all members became increasingly important.

Following the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, the Auxiliary introduced what became known as “Mandatory Training,” requiring all members to complete standardized courses covering ethics, civil rights, security awareness, privacy protection, and workplace conduct.

Over time, the program evolved into today’s Auxiliary Core Training (AUXCT), reflecting a broader emphasis on professionalism, operational readiness, and integration with the missions of the United States Coast Guard.

Today, AUXCT ensures auxiliarists maintain the foundational knowledge necessary to safely and effectively support Coast Guard operations while upholding the highest standards of service.

Training Tuesday
This week’s topic is uniforms.

The uniforms of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary are designed to closely mirror those of the active-duty United States Coast Guard while maintaining distinct Auxiliary identifiers. Auxiliary uniforms symbolize professionalism, service, and unity with the Coast Guard mission, while clearly distinguishing Auxiliarists from active-duty personnel through silver insignia and the use of the letter “A” on devices and shoulder boards.

Operational Dress Uniform (ODU)

The Operational Dress Uniform is the primary working uniform worn during operational activities such as patrols, vessel safety checks, public affairs events, and watchstanding duties.

Tropical Blue Uniform (“Trops”)

The Tropical Blue uniform is commonly worn for meetings, classrooms, public affairs engagements, and office environments.

⚓ Wearing the uniform of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is a privilege — one that represents professionalism, dedication, and pride in service.

Every Auxiliarist is responsible for wearing the uniform correctly and maintaining the high standards expected of our organization. Proper uniform wear reflects respect for the Coast Guard, the Auxiliary, and the communities we serve.

When we wear the uniform properly, we honor the traditions of those who serve before us and uphold the public’s trust in our mission.

Throwback Thursday
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a vessel tracking and collision-avoidance technology that continuously broadcasts a vessel’s identity, position, course, and speed over VHF radio frequencies. Conceived in 1986 by Swedish inventor Benny Pettersson, AIS was originally designed to help mariners electronically “see” and identify surrounding vessels in congested waterways or during periods of restricted visibility.

AIS has since evolved from a local, line-of-sight collision-avoidance system into a cornerstone of global maritime domain awareness. Its development has been marked by several major milestones:

• 1986: Benny Pettersson conceptualizes a system requiring vessels to continuously broadcast identification and navigational data.

• 1996: The International Telecommunication Union drafts the first technical standards and communication protocols for AIS.

• December 2000: The International Maritime Organization formally adopts AIS carriage requirements for passenger ships and large commercial vessels.

• 2002: The AIS mandate enters into force under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, requiring vessels over 300 gross tons engaged in international voyages to carry Class A AIS transponders.

• 2006: Technical standards for lower-cost Class B transponders are introduced, accelerating adoption among smaller commercial vessels, fishing boats, and recreational boaters.

• 2009 onward: The emergence of Satellite AIS (S-AIS) enables AIS transmissions to be received from space, transforming AIS into a global maritime surveillance tool supporting fleet tracking, search and rescue operations, environmental monitoring, and the detection of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities.

Today, AIS is used not only for collision avoidance, but also for port management, maritime law enforcement, environmental protection, commercial shipping logistics, and national security operations worldwide.

Throwback Thursday
National Safe Boating Week marks the annual kickoff to the summer boating season and promotes boating safety, responsible operation, and life jacket awareness through education and community outreach.

⚓ Key Milestones in National Safe Boating Week History

• 1958 – Congress passed a joint resolution authorizing the President to proclaim the seven-day period ending on the last Friday before Memorial Day as “National Safe Boating Week.”

• 1958 – The National Safe Boating Council was established to coordinate grassroots boating safety initiatives, vessel safety checks, and educational programs.

• 1961 – John F. Kennedy signed Presidential Proclamation 3397, one of the earliest official recognitions of National Safe Boating Week.

• 2000 – Canada officially joined the initiative, expanding the observance into the North American Safe Boating Campaign focused on boating safety and life jacket awareness.

Boating safety education and community engagement continue to help save lives on and around the water.

🚨 Training Tuesday 🚨

They are your neighbors, your friends, and maybe even your doctor.

Qualified members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary may support Coast Guard Health Services missions by assisting clinics, sickbays, and SAR stations near their communities. Their service helps expand medical support capabilities and strengthen readiness across the Coast Guard.

Authorized missions include:
⚓ Supporting Coast Guard Medical Clinics and Sickbays
⚓ Providing on-the-water Emergency Medical Services support
⚓ Teaching CPR, AED, and First Aid to Active Duty, Reserve, and Auxiliary members

Physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, EMTs, and allied health professionals bring their expertise to these important missions both ashore and afloat. Certified instructors also help deliver lifesaving training throughout the Coast Guard and Auxiliary.

Service above self takes many forms — including caring for the health and safety of others.

Bravo Zulu to all Auxiliarists supporting Coast Guard Health Services missions.

Throwback Thursday Arrrrr

🏴‍☠️ Before the United States Coast Guard became known for search and rescue, it was America’s first line of defense against pirates, smugglers, and criminals at sea.

In 1790, Alexander Hamilton created the Revenue Cutter Service to protect the young nation’s economy and enforce federal law on the water. These armed cutters patrolled dangerous coastlines, chased pirate vessels through the Caribbean and Gulf waters, and defended American commerce long before the U.S. Navy was fully established.

⚓ Revenue Cutter crews boarded suspicious ships, seized illegal cargo, and confronted armed criminals threatening the nation’s trade routes. During the fight against the transatlantic slave trade, Congress authorized slave traders to be treated as pirates, leading to the capture of hundreds of slave ships and saving countless lives.

Today’s Coast Guard continues that proud tradition. From drug interdiction and port security to migrant interdiction and maritime law enforcement, modern Coast Guard crews still battle criminals on the seas every day.

And while the nickname “Puddle Pirates” is often said with humor, it reflects the incredible versatility of the service — operating everywhere from rivers and inland waterways to the open ocean.

For more than 235 years, the mission has remained the same:
🇺🇸 Protect the homeland.
⚓ Defend America’s waters.
🛟 Save lives at sea.
