Sometimes, the biggest business win is realizing how far you've come.

When SCORE client Dave started his business 16 years ago, he was working out of his backyard garage with no college degree and no business experience. Today, he's built a profitable automotive business, paid off $167,000 in debt, and secured the financing he needs to grow his three companies.

But the biggest change isn't just in the numbers. It's in how Dave sees himself and what he's accomplished.

After a decade of working with SCORE mentors and learning to understand the financial side of business, Dave presented his growth strategy to four banks. All four made offers.

Reflecting on the milestone, he shared:

“I'm finally making that transition from the ‘I should be here, I should be doing this’ syndrome to the ‘look what I've done, look what I've got, and look where I'm going’ syndrome.”

Mentorship can help entrepreneurs build stronger businesses, make more informed decisions, and recognize the progress they've made along the way.

Big ideas. Local entrepreneurs. A stronger Miramar. 🎉
SCORE Broward was proud to partner with the City of Miramar to help aspiring entrepreneurs turn their ideas into actionable business plans—and prepare to pitch those ideas with confidence.
Participants worked with SCORE mentors to develop their business plans, strengthen their presentations, and prepare for the Miramar Pitch Competition, where finalists presented their businesses for the opportunity to receive startup grant funding.
The result? Several local entrepreneurs were awarded $10,000 grants to help turn their plans into reality.
But the story doesn’t end there.
Over the next several weeks, we’ll be introducing you to some of the competition winners—sharing their businesses, their experiences, and what they hope to accomplish next.

What happens when an entrepreneur's relationship with SCORE lasts for 15 years?
Meet Lisa I. Perez, SPHR, founder of HBL Resources, Inc., a South Florida firm helping small and mid-market businesses build stronger managers, healthier workplaces and better HR practices.

Lisa founded HBL Resources in 2011 after a 35-year career in human resources and a realization that continues to guide her business today:
Business success and human dignity are not trade-offs.
Her relationship with SCORE began before HBL Resources even opened its doors.
Lisa participated in SCORE's Simple Steps for Starting Your Business workshop and worked with SCORE mentor George Gremse as she developed her business.

Fifteen years later, she's still working with a SCORE mentor—but now the conversations are about licensing, scaling and the next chapter of HBL Resources.

Along the way, Lisa's SCORE relationship came full circle. For more than a decade, she has presented educational programs for SCORE, sharing her HR and people-management expertise with other small business owners.
And in 2025, HBL Resources was recognized in the Miramar business competition, another milestone in a 15-year entrepreneurial journey.
Lisa's advice to other entrepreneurs?
