Combined Arms Command and Fort Leavenworth, and

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, let's look beyond personal thankfulness to understand how gratitude serves as a foundation for healthy relationships and the prevention of sexual violence and harmful behavior.

The word "gratitude" comes from the Latin term gratia, meaning grace, graciousness, or thankfulness. This root is fundamentally tied to kindness, generosity, and the beauty of giving and receiving, which are all essential elements for fostering a culture of respect and healthy interaction.

🧠 The Psychology Behind Healthy Appreciation
Gratitude encourages an outward focus and appreciation for others, counteracting the self-centeredness that can fuel harmful behavior.

- Counteracting Harmful Emotions: Gratitude is celebrated in Positive Psychology as a resource that correlates negatively with depression, anxiety, and envy. These negative emotions, particularly the sense of entitlement or deprivation (the opposite of a sense of abundance), can sometimes be precursors or contributors to disrespectful and harmful behaviors.

- Dimensions of Respect: Researchers find that gratitude includes an essential dimension: appreciation of others. Grateful people are able to appreciate the contribution and autonomy of others to their well-being, fostering mutual respect rather than a transactional or entitled view of relationships.

🤝 Gratitude: A Core of Prosocial Behavior

The active cultivation of gratitude directly supports the principles of harmful behavior and sexual violence prevention by promoting empathy, reciprocity, and positive social exchange:

- Fosters Empathy and Recognition: Gratitude is defined as an empathic emotion because people experience it when they recognize and appreciate what another individual did for them. This ability to recognize and value another's actions is the basis for consent and healthy boundaries.

- Encourages Altruism and Reciprocity: Gratitude leads to prosocial organizational behaviors and organizational citizenship behaviors (helping, sharing, cooperating). When individuals feel thanked and appreciated, they are more likely to help others—creating a virtuous circle of positive moral reinforcement and generalized reciprocity based on mutual good will and respect, not coercion or obligation.

🛡️ Building Healthy Organizations

In organizations, gratitude is crucial for creating a safe and respectful environment:

- Promotes Psychological Safety: Gratitude contributes to psychological safety, where individuals feel secure to express their own ideas and ask for help without fear of penalization. This open, non-punitive environment is vital for survivors to report harm and for addressing misconduct transparently.

- Antidote to Toxic Emotions: Gratitude acts as an "antidote against toxic emotions" like jealousy and the perception of injustice. In a respectful environment, gratitude positively influences attitudes, replacing entitlement with appreciation and strengthening teamwork and trust.

- Leadership and Prevention: A leadership style aimed at promoting 360-degree gratitude (leaders showing thanks, and colleagues expressing appreciation) creates a cycle that reinforces positive relationships and fosters an environment where disrespectful or harmful actions are less likely to take root.

This holiday season, let's practice gratitude not just for what we have, but for the positive relationships and the mutual respect that keep our communities, workplaces, and families safe and healthy.

Combined Arms Command and Fort Leavenworth

This , we're not just growing mustaches; we're growing conversations that truly matter, especially for our military-connected community.

The unique experiences of service members, veterans, and their families can impact mental health in profound ways. From combat stress to the challenges of reintegration, silent battles are often fought long after uniforms are put away.

We also recognize that military-connected individuals, both men and women, are not immune to the devastating impact of sexual violence. For survivors, the road to healing requires immense courage and unwavering support.

It's time to break the silence. 🗣️ Speak up. 🤝 Reach out. ❤️ Offer support.

Movember is a powerful reminder to check in with the men (and everyone) in our lives. Let's foster a culture where seeking help for mental health challenges or finding support after sexual violence is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.

You are not alone. Your service matters, and so does your well-being.

Teal Tuesdays Message from this week.

“Continuing the Conversation Beyond Domestic Violence Awareness Month"

As October comes to a close and we mark the end of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we pause to honor survivors, acknowledge those affected, and recognize the collective work being done to prevent abuse and promote safety.
While the month may be ending, our commitment to fostering healthy, respectful relationships continues every day. Building a culture of empathy, open communication, and mutual respect is central to who we are both in the workplace and in our communities.

Let’s carry awareness and reflection of this month forward:
• Continue learning about the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships.

• Support colleagues and loved ones with compassion and understanding.

Remember that help and resources are available year-round for anyone in need. As we move through the challenges of the current government shutdown, we are still fully operational and continuing our important work adapting where needed, supporting each other, and finding ways to move forward together. Your professionalism, resilience, and teamwork truly embody the Teal spirit we celebrate every Tuesday.

Thank you for being part of a team that values safety, respect, and support for all. Together, we make a difference one conversation, one act of care, and one relationship at a time.
