Fun Fact Friday!

Before modern radios became reliable, the U.S. Army Signal Corps used carrier pigeons to deliver battlefield messages.

During World War I, some pigeons flew through gunfire and gas attacks to carry critical information between units. One famous pigeon, “Cher Ami,” helped save nearly 200 Soldiers after delivering a message despite being severely injured in flight.

Did you know, the red poppy became a symbol of remembrance after WWI? It is traditionally worn on the Friday before Memorial Day to honor fallen service members. The movement was inspired in part by Moina Michael, an American teacher and volunteer who campaigned to make the poppy a national symbol of remembrance after reading the poem “In Flanders Fields.”
