On Tuesday May 16, 2023 at 4:09 pm all four boro fire companies were dispatched to 5000 Hilltop Court in the Arrive Complex for a reported structure fire. Chief of Department, FL-9 Richard Onufrey, arrived on scene first and was advised by evacuating residents that the fire was actually at 6000 Hilltop Court on the 4th floor. During his sizeup, Chief Onufrey noticed smoke pushing from the 4th floor balcony on the west side of the building. Fire alarms were also sounding and a sprinkler head had been activated on the balcony. At this time, Fire units began arriving on scene. The fire involved patio furniture on the balcony and the bulk of the fire was kept in check by the sprinkler system. The rest of the fire was extinguished by responding companies and the building was ventilated of smoke. There were no injuries and the fire was kept to the place of origin on the balcony. Residents were allowed back into their apartment in about an hour. The Fort Lee Fire Prevention Bureau did the origin and cause investigation and results are pending.

Mary Boujotas joined the FLFD in 2003, but has been a resident of Fort Lee almost her entire life. Not only is she a dedicated member of the department, she is also the first female Captain of the Fort Lee Fire Department. Standing tall at 5 ft 0, one of the many reasons she loves being part of the Fort Lee Fire Department is because she views herself as a role model for females who may want to be a firefighter as well, even if they are petite!

Mary likes to joke around. She even kidded saying that her mom had to wake her up when the building across the street from her was on fire, and that’s how she slept through her first fire!

Thank you Mary for being a a dedicated member of the department as well as a role model for so many girls out there. This spotlight's for you!
