The Guardian Battalion Soldiers enjoyed an outstanding Thanksgiving feast at our Warrior Restaurant today! Although some Soldiers miss home, they were truly excited to be served by the Battalion and Company Command Teams along with a special visit from the CASCOM and 23rd Quartermaster Brigade Command Teams.

Guardians, here is some information for Holiday Block Leave (HBL). Our goal is to ensure our team is safe, our team is accounted for, and that our AIT and Cadre get some well deserved time with Family and friends during Holiday Block Leave.

Families, please remember, our Soldiers will adhere to General Order number one and command guidance. That means no Family will be meeting up on Fort Lee for any reason. Our Soldiers will not be heading off post unless through a node (air, train, bus, or privately owned vehicles via a centralized location). We have great leadership ready to link up Families at multiple node locations. Stay in contact with your Soldier and stay safe!

Please read this letter regarding Operation Allies Refuge from Maj. Gen. Mark T. Simerly, commanding general of CASCOM and Fort Lee, and the CASCOM command team.

My sincerest thanks to the great Fort Lee Community for its support to Task Force Eagle and our Department of Defense partners during the Operation Allies Refuge mission. We are proud to support the Department of State, the lead federal agency for this operation, through U.S. Northern Command’s joint force land component command, U.S. Army North.

As you can imagine, it is indeed a great honor to be included in this historic mission to help keep safe and support those brave Afghan special immigrant applicants who worked side-by-side with us for so long.

The Afghan guests we are welcoming to Fort Lee showed remarkable courage for nearly two decades during Operation Enduring Freedom and NATO’s International Security Assistance Force and Resolute Support Mission. They and others like them shared grave wartime risks with Americans and our allies and partners in the fight against terrorism.

Task Force Eagle is now a part of another important mission, in which we will help safeguard the lives and the families of the people who helped keep us safe for nearly two decades.

A host of organizations from across the Department of Defense enterprise and beyond brought their best and brightest to Task Force Eagle. Their hard work and professionalism will help us continue our day-to-day missions with minimal disruption to keep the Sustainment Center of Excellence running smoothly.

My thanks, too, to those of you in the Fort Lee Community who continue to show tremendous support for Operation Allies Refuge and our Afghan guests. We appreciate the way so many have already reached out to be a part of the history we are making together.

Although our mission may be temporary – like our Afghan partners’ stay here at Fort Lee – our contributions will be enduring, both for the people who are moving onto life in a new country and for those of us who are honored to be part of this noble and honorable mission.

Juneteenth Freedom Day

Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day, or Juneteenth Independence Day, is the holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, observed annually on June 19. Juneteenth is celebrated on Saturday, June 19, 2021. This year's first observance of Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday will occur Today, June 18.

In 1863, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free. More than two years would pass, however, before the news reached African Americans living in Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The former slaves immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting, song, and dance.

The following year, on June 19th, the first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas. The original observances included prayer meetings and the singing of spirituals, and celebrants wore new clothes representing their newfound freedom. Within a few years, people in other states were celebrating the day as well, making it an annual tradition.

Celebrations have continued across the United States into the 21st century. They typically included prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals with music, food, and dancing.

Juneteenth became a state holiday in Texas in 1980, and several other states subsequently followed suit. The day is also celebrated outside the United States, with organizations in several countries using the day to recognize the end of slavery and celebrate the culture and achievements of African Americans.

This year marks 246 years of the U.S. Army serving and defending our country. No matter the challenges the Army and our nation have faced, Army Soldiers and Civilians have had the courage and patriotism to answer the call to serve.

In a celebratory token for today the Battalion Executive Officer MAJ Patton-Neal and the Battalion Command Sergeant Major, CSM Gardner participated in the traditional cake cutting with the youngest Soldier in the battalion.

The people you work with, and serving is what it’s all about comes to mind after saying goodbye to battle buddy, signing awards at the last minute, recognizing leaders, and then walking out alone after everyone is gone. No fan fare, no fuss, just the satisfaction that you gave your all, and the team is what’s important. If you can’t, we can!
