The Fort Leonard Wood Blood Donor Center team is back from our out-of-state blood drives and welcomes our local donors to give life-saving blood to the Armed Services Blood Program. Our doors are open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Wednesday and everyone is encouraged to give.
All donors receive a free t-shirt, some juice and cookies and a heart-felt “thank you” for donating.
Donors completing their third ASBP donation receive a Certificate of Achievement, worth five promotion points.
Fort Leonard Wood Regulation 690-12, Civilian Personnel Leave Administration, encourages governmenet civilian employees to give blood, granting them excused absence for the time necessary to donate blood, recuperate afterward and travel to and from the donation site. The maximum excused absence will not exceed four hours. Please coordinate donation time with your supervisor.
Potential blood donors must weigh at least 116 pounds, be at least 17 years old and feeling well for at least three days before the drive. They must also be well hydrated and have eaten something before donating.
Those wanting to donate should know what foreign countries they’ve traveled to in the past 12 months and bring a photo ID (military ID, driver’s license, etc) with them. They’ll need it to check in.
The Armed Services Blood Program is the official blood supplier for the U.S. military. Blood goes directly to medical facilities at deployed locations around the world as well as military hospitals on installations throughout the Department of War.
The military health system requires hundreds of units of blood every day. It's the ASBP's mission to ensure that blood is available to medical providers, but that can’t be done without volunteer donors like you. So, if you have your health, celebrate it by giving blood to those who are not as fortunate. We look forward to seeing you soon. For more information, all 573-596-6150.

Did you know that blood is a specialized body fluid. It has four main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The blood that runs through the veins, arteries and capillaries is known as whole blood which is a mixture of about 55 percent plasma and 45 percent blood cells. About 7-8 percent of your total body weight is blood. An average-sized man has about 12 pints of blood in his body, and an average-sized woman has about 9 pints. Foxtrot Company, 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment earned their first entry in the Fort Leonard Wood Blood Donor Center's 100-Donor Club June 21 by having 110 Soldiers raise their hands to give blood to the Armed Services Blood Program. The donor center team, along with members of the FLW Mid-Missouri Chapter of the Association of the United States Army, presented a Giving 4 Living streamer June 30 to mark the company's milestone.
The 100-Donor Club is reserved for units providing 100 or more eligible donors during a single-day blood drive. Members get the unit name, drive date and number of eligible donors etched in a 100-Donor Club plaque hanging in the donor center's lobby along with the streamer and an article in the post newspaper on their accomplishment.
So, what does it take to motive Soldiers in training to give blood in such large numbers? 1st Sgt. James Bone, F/3-10 IN first sergeant, said he sat down with the trainees and had a conversation about the importance of donating blood, who could receive it and how just a few minutes of their time could help save someone's life.
"We wanted to impress upon them the value of selfless service and sacrifice, helping them see the bigger picture," he said. "Giving blood is one of the simplest ways to make a real difference in another person's life."
With only 131 trainees in the cycle, Bone said reaching this milestone speaks volumes about the caliber of Soldiers in the company.
"Their willingness to voluntarily give their time and blood for others demonstrates the selfless service and commitment we strive to instill from day one," he said. "The cadre of Foxtrot Company continually provides real-world context throughout training, reinforcing how the Seven Army Values extend beyond the classroom and into everyday opportunities to serve others."
When it comes to donating blood to the Armed Services Blood Program, Bone said everyone should understand the value of giving and recognize that one day you, someone you love, or someone you serve beside may need donated blood.
"It may not happen today or even years from now, but the need is constant," he said. "The discomfort of a needle lasts only a moment, while the possibility of saving a life can have a lasting impact on families and communities. It's a small act of sacrifice with the potential to make an immeasurable difference."
