What would the typical American GI eat during the Vietnam War? What did you or a family member eat while they served in Vietnam?

On September 5, 1917 the first recruits began to arrive at the newly completed Camp Lewis! Here we honor Private Herbert Hauck who arrived to Camp Lewis acting as the chauffeur for the arriving base commander, Colonel Peter Davison. While we have the names of some of the first recruits to arrive to Camp Lewis on September 5, by September 9 the camp would have already processed 2,274 draftees from all around the Pacific Northwest. By the end of September Camp Lewis had more than 20,000 men!

Thank you Heidi for all you have given the Lewis Army Museum and best of luck with your new adventure! Your enthusiasm, expertise, and leadership has been very much appreciated. To be somewhat cheesy, quoting Pericles, “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others”, thank you for weaving yourself into the fabric of the Lewis Army Museum.

In honor of National Dog Day we bring you the cutest dog blanket! Military working dogs have incredible importance for all branches of the Armed Forces, but units would also employ dogs for non-tactical reasons, like morale boosters. During WWI, a dog attached to the 10th Engineers, Company B may have had Sentry duties, be deployed for pest control and offer companionship. While this dog blanket is not currently on display, it is still very much loved. While we do not have a photo of a dog wearing this particular blanket, the National Archives has a photo of a dog from Company B, 111th Machine Gun Battalion wearing a similar blanket. The dog in this picture may have been in France the same time a dog from the 10th Engineers wore their blanket.

A look inside JBLM

America's First Corps welcomed Washington state leaders, legislators and congressional staff to Joint Base Lewis-McChord for Delegation Day, hosted by LTG Matthew McFarlane.

The visit gave state and federal partners a closer look at I Corps, 62nd Airlift Wing and JBLM missions, with briefings, equipment displays and time with Soldiers across the installation.

Events like Delegation Day connect the people making decisions for Washington with the service members, capabilities and missions based here at home.
