Fire Contained at Farm & Home Store – No Injuries Reported
Fort Madison, IA — On the evening of March 20, 2026, at 11:26 PM, Fort Madison Fire & Rescue responded to a fire alarm at the Farm & Home Store located at 4810 Avenue O.
Fire crews arrived to find smoke present throughout the building. Upon investigation, firefighters located a small fire in an interior area of the store where live poultry was being housed. The fire was quickly extinguished using portable extinguishers, and crews confirmed that the fire had not spread beyond the immediate area.
The incident occurred after normal operating hours. There were no injuries to customers or employees.
While the fire itself was contained to a limited area, smoke traveled throughout the building, affecting much of the interior. As a result, the store is currently closed while cleanup and evaluation are underway. A professional restoration company is on site assisting store management with assessing smoke impact, cleaning, and recovery efforts.
Preliminary findings indicate the fire was accidental in nature and related to an electrical setup used to power heat lamps in the poultry area.
Unfortunately, some of the baby chicks housed in the area did not survive due to smoke and heat exposure, while others were safely removed.
Fort Madison Fire & Rescue worked closely with store management on scene and will continue to assist as they move through the reopening process. The fire department will ensure all life safety systems and conditions are verified prior to the building reopening to the public.
Thanks to early alarm activation and a rapid response by Fort Madison Fire & Rescue, the fire was contained quickly, preventing a more significant loss.
Respectfully,
