Lewis School History
During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the elementary grades in Fort Meade were part of an all-grade school located on East Broadway. Additionally, some one-room schools, serving grades one through eight were located in the outlying rural communities of Pine Grove, Lake Buffum, and Tilghman. As the need for consolidation of some of the smaller schools was realized, a project

to build a grammar school in Fort Meade was proposed. Lewis, a local physician and a school trustee, was instrumental in establishing a new school adjacent to the existing school. Dr. Lewis, a two-term mayor of Fort Meade and a charter member of the First Baptist Church, arranged for the donation of several acres of land by the church for the purpose of constructing the Fort Meade Grammar School. Little of Wauchula. Plan and specifications were approved by the trustees and adopted by the Polk County School Board on June 4, 1925. The bid of $45,000 for the constructing of the school, submitted by W.C. Robinson and Company, was accepted by the Board on July 6, 1925. Construction began the following year in a beautiful oak grove adjacent to the existing school, and was occupied by classes in September 1926. The school was initially identified as Fort Meade Primary School, Number II. Later that year the school was dedicated to Dr. O.B. Lewis and renamed Lewis Elementary School. The school’s first woman principal, Mrs. Lola Peeples, was appointed in 1943. She served in this capacity two years. Dorothy Gabriel was appointed principal and she remained until 1968. It was during this time that grades four and five were moved from the high school and Polk County Schools were racially integrated. A music room, library, and two wings consisting of eight classrooms were added in an attempt to house all elementary age students at the Lewis facility. Anna Woodbury School History
The Anna Woodbury School was built in 1953 and originally served Fort Meade’s black students, grades one through eight. Ninth grade was added at a later time. The school was named in honor of Mrs. Anna Woodbury, the daughter of Bert and Lulu Thomas. She was an influential black woman who taught at the school and lived in the Fort Meade community. The school was erected on seven acres of land that had been donated by a Mr. Morrison, brother-in-law to Mrs. Carlton Marsh. The initial building consisted of three classrooms, an office area, and storage space. It was constructed for the price of $51,945.54. Because there was no lunchroom, students brought their lunches or went home for an hour to eat. Later students were permitted to eat lunch at an old cafeteria located across the highway. Additions were made to the school in 1962-1963 to accommodate the growing population. There were now nine classrooms, a cafeteria, custodian’s room, storage room, principal’s office, and a patio area. The large field for physical education classes included a lighted softball diamond, a basketball court, and playground equipment. By this time the staff had increased to eleven teachers, a principal, four lunchroom workers, and a custodian/bus driver. There were 296 students enrolled in grades one through nine, 26 of whom were transported from the rural areas of Fort Meade. Tenth through twelfth grade students attended Union Academy in Bartow. In 1968 the name of the school was changed to Fort Meade Middle School and served sixth and seventh grade students in an integrated setting. The school continued as Fort Meade Middle School until 1998 when the Polk County School Board approved moving sixth and seventh grades to the Fort Meade High School campus in efforts of offering a broader curriculum to these students. Plans were made then to renovate the buildings and add an additional wing. The former Anna Woodbury School was to become the new campus for fourth and fifth grade students who were currently attending Riverside Elementary School across town. The school was once again bestowed with the name of one of its beloved original teachers when it became Anna Woodbury Elementary School in August of 2000. Anna Woodbury Elementary School began its first year as the smallest public elementary school in Polk County with 225 students under the direction of Principal Darlene Butler. The school’s mascot was the All-Star. In the fall of the 2002-2003 school year, Lewis Elementary and Anna Woodbury Elementary Schools became one school. While situated on two separate sites, both campuses share a principal and two assistant principals.

Mrs. Belcher’s “Ready to Learn” lesson had everyone’s full attention, including our safety guardian, Mr. Whatley! 😂 He traded his usual post for a spot on the carpet and joined Ms. Radford’s class for the lesson.

At Lewis Anna Woodbury, we believe you’re never too grown-up, or too important, to sit crisscross applesauce and learn something new! 🦁🖤💛

Dear All-Star Families,

After reviewing the current weather conditions and radar, I believe we are in the clear for dismissal today and will proceed with our regular dismissal procedures.

As a reminder, student and staff safety remains our top priority. If lightning begins in the area during dismissal, we will immediately bring all students and staff indoors and may need to temporarily pause dismissal until it is safe to resume.

At this time, the radar looks clear, and there has been no lightning reported in our area for more than 45 minutes. We will continue to monitor conditions closely throughout dismissal and make any necessary adjustments if weather conditions change.

Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and partnership as we work to keep everyone safe.

Sincerely,

Christine Harrison

Hello All-Star Parents and Guardians,

We are closely monitoring the weather this afternoon, and current forecasts indicate we may experience rain and/or lightning around dismissal time.

I would like to remind families of our rainy-day and severe weather procedures for student walkers:
•If it is raining but there is no lightning in the area, students will be dismissed as usual and permitted to walk home.
•If lightning is present in the area, students will not be permitted to leave campus on foot for safety reasons.

In the event of lightning, students will remain safely supervised on campus and must be checked out by a parent or guardian. To pick up your child, you must present either:
•Your child's GREEN school-issued dismissal card, or
•A government-issued photo ID.

Please note that knowing your child's dismissal number alone is not sufficient for release. For the safety of all students, a GREEN dismissal card or government-issued ID must be presented at pickup. This procedure is similar to our regular car rider dismissal process.

We understand that weather-related adjustments may cause delays, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our students and staff.

Important: I will send another message between 2:30 PM and 2:45 PM with any dismissal updates or changes based on weather conditions at that time.

In Summary:
•Students will be allowed to walk home if it is raining and no lightning is present.
•If lightning is present, students will be held on campus and must be picked up by a parent or guardian using their GREEN school-issued dismissal card or a government-issued photo ID.
•An additional weather and dismissal update will be sent between 2:30 PM and 2:45 PM.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Lewis Anna Woodbury Families,

I am emailing to inform you that we conducted two drills on campus today - lockdown and fire. When we perform these drills, we announce it as a monthly drill to the students and staff to avoid unnecessary worry. These training drills are a critical part of our safe schools' plan and help to prepare our students and staff in case of a real emergency. Again, today’s activities were only drills.
We take any threat very seriously, as providing a safe learning environment for our students and staff is our highest priority. We will continue to conduct drills each month and you will be advised accordingly.

Thank you,
Christine Harrison

Dear All-Star Families,

What an amazing first week of school! Our All-Star Lions have settled into their classrooms, begun building relationships with their teachers and classmates, and are already engaging in meaningful learning experiences. Thank you for your patience, support, and partnership as we worked together to launch another successful school year.

As we enter Week 2, we continue focusing on establishing strong routines, fostering a positive school culture, and helping every student feel confident, connected, and ready to learn. We are proud of the growth and resilience our students have already shown and look forward to building on this momentum.

Week 2 Reminders & Updates

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures Thank you for your patience during the first week of school. While our procedures have become smoother, we ask families to continue following established arrival and dismissal routines to ensure the safety of all students. Please remember that student backpacks should continue to have their dismissal tags attached and visible each day.

Car Rider Dismissal All vehicles must display their 2026-2027 GREEN Dismissal Card to pick up students through the car line. If you need an additional dismissal card, please contact the front office. Having your card visible helps us keep dismissal efficient and safe.

Attendance Matters Being at school every day and arriving on time is critical for student success. Gates open at 7:30 AM, the on-time bell rings at 7:55 AM, and the tardy bell rings at 8:00 AM. Thank you for helping your child start each day ready to learn.

Communication Please continue to stay connected through our school website, page, Parent Portal Communications, email, and your child's agenda. Don't forget to check out our weekly Pride Press, which is shared each Sunday through email and Facebook.

Student Agendas Student agendas are an important communication tool between home and school. Please review your child's agenda each evening for reminders, homework, and teacher communication. Also at the front of your student agenda is a copy of the LAW Student Handbook. Please review and sign that you understand our expectations and campus policies.

Cell Phone and Smart Device Reminder In accordance with Florida House Bill 1105, elementary students may not use cell phones during the school day. All phones and smart devices, including smart watches, must remain powered off and stored in backpacks while students are on campus.

Lunch Visitors We appreciate your cooperation as students continue learning school routines. As previously communicated, lunch visitors will begin on Tuesday, September 1st, allowing students - and staff time to establish consistent procedures and expectations.

Celebrating a Great Start - We have already seen so many examples of our students demonstrating kindness, responsibility, and perseverance throughout our school community. Thank you for encouraging these positive behaviors at home and supporting our efforts to create a safe and welcoming environment where every child can thrive.

As always, thank you for partnering with us. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve your family and look forward to another fantastic week of learning and growth.
