🧑‍🚒Faces of Fort Mill- Waites Waller🧯

Protecting life and property are always top of mind for this week’s The Faces of Fort Mill spotlight employee. Meet Waites Waller, a firefighter with the Fort Mill Fire Department.

During his year with the Town, Waller said his days have always focused on staying ready for emergency response.

“We start each day by checking equipment and making sure everything is in order. Throughout the day, we train, work as a team and stay physically active,” Waller said. “We also maintain the station and keep things organized. When needed, we respond quickly to calls and work together to help the community.”

🚒Public Service Inspiration: “I wanted to go into public service because I’ve always cared about helping people. The fire department stood out to me because it gives me the chance to be there for others when they really need it and make a real difference in my community.”

🤝Family Matters: “What I enjoy most about my job is the sense of family within the department. Everyone looks out for each other, and there’s a strong bond of trust and teamwork. It feels good to be part of a group that works so closely together.”

👍His Proudest Accomplishment: “One accomplishment I’m proud of is how much I’ve grown since starting in the fire service. I’ve improved my skills, learned to work better under pressure and become more confident in my role.”

Why He♥️FM: “I really enjoy being downtown, especially during our Town events.”

Making a Difference: “I see our work make an impact almost every day. Sometimes it is on calls or just being out in the community!”

💎Waites’ Hidden FM Gem: “A hidden gem to me is the Fort Mill Family Restaurant!”

Fire Department Fun Fact: “A fun little fact is that our fire hydrants have different colors to let us know how much water we can get out of them!”

😊Final Words: “I just want to thank the residents of Fort Mill for the trust they place in us. That is a big honor, and we’re here for you whenever you need us.”

🚒 A Proud Night for the Fort Mill Fire Department 🚒

A packed house of community members, Town leaders and firefighters gathered at Fort Mill Fire Station 1 on June 9, 2026, to celebrate the dedication of two new fire apparatus that will help the Fire Department continue its mission of protecting the community.

The ceremony included the unveiling of Ladder 1, a 105’ heavy-duty aerial truck, and Engine 3, with remarks from Town leadership and fire personnel. The event also showcased the fire service traditions of a wheel wetting and truck push-in ceremony for both vehicles.

“Today you are going to witness what I call a fire service miracle…of change that firefighters welcome with wide open arms, a change that brings pride as firefighters showcase their iconic showpiece that represents their passion and the service to those they serve,” said Fire Chief Chipper Wilkerson. “We’re going to celebrate and dedicate two beautiful pieces of machinery of superior quality, two pieces of machinery that improve firefighter safety while responding to incidents.”

Mayor Guynn Savage praised the department's dedication and the Town's investment in public safety.

“What do you give a fireman, a hero, to drive? What do you send a hero to an emergency in? You want them to be safe, you want them to have every piece of equipment absolutely necessary to take care of that situation and take care of our community,” Savage said. “We are very proud today to give the heroes something really cool to drive.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate this important milestone for the Fort Mill Fire Department and our community. 🚒❤️

🚧Millstone Park Playground Resurfacing 🚧

The Fort Mill community will soon see an exciting addition to the Millstone Park Playground- a brand-new rubber safety surface!

To install the new surfacing, crews will be closing the playground, located at 104 Spratt St., beginning on Monday, June 15. The park will tentatively remain closed for up to 10 days. During this work, the wood mulch that currently lines the playground will be removed and replaced with a rubber surfacing.

The community is encouraged to use nearby parks during this time, including Harris Street Park, Walter Y. Elisha Park and Steele Street Park. For questions, please contact the Parks & Recreation Department by calling (80) 547-2273.

Thank you for your patience during this project!
