🚒Groundbreaking for Fire Station #3

The sound of shovels scooping up heaps of dirt were followed by a chorus of cheers as Fort Mill Town Council celebrated the groundbreaking of Fire Station #3 on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026.

The event took place at 1655 Masons Bend Drive where a 10,000-square-foot station will soon be constructed. Completion is anticipated for Fall 2027.

Fire Chief Chipper Wilkerson said when he became chief in 2015 he saw the potential for the Fire Department to support a growing community.

“We have worked to educate everyone around us on the importance of, as well as the need for, well-distributed fire and EMS presence throughout the community for an effective response force,” Wilkerson said. “Seeing dirt move is proof that the Town of Fort Mill is a safety center at its core and is willing to do what is necessary to protect its citizens.”

Fort Mill Mayor Guynn Savage said the groundbreaking was an important milestone for the Town.

“The ultimate meaning of a groundbreaking is not the dirt we turn but the lives we touch once the walls go up,” Savage said. “We’re proud to begin construction on land that has been donated to our Town. Proud of the diligence in planning to ensure that we are effective and efficient in its design and operation. Proud to know that we will continue our legacy responses to our community in their time of need.”

Savage said she is proud of the people who will “work, train and live at this facility.”

“I read a quote that said, ‘let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless in facing them,’” she said. “Today I’m proud to be breaking ground to house and serve our fearless and incredible firefighters.”

The station will initially be staffed by four full-time firefighters, with the facility built to support up to eight as staffing needs grow. Its two bays can accommodate up to four engines total, giving the Town room to expand operations over time.

🌳Keep Fort Mill Beautiful Becomes Affiliate

Priceless and amazing are just some of the words Fort Mill Town Council used to describe the Keep Fort Mill Beautiful committee during their Aug. 24, 2026 meeting.

The discussion came as the committee was officially named a Keep America Beautiful affiliate on Monday night.

Mayor Guynn Savage said the committee is a “priceless” benefit for the Town.

“It is an amazing gift to Fort Mill and I thank you for what you are doing,” Savage said.

Joseph Berry with Palmetto Pride and Keep South Carolina Beautiful was on hand to present the Town with the affiliate honor. He lauded the group for its impressive initiative in addressing the issues of conservation and beautification in Fort Mill.

“This group spent the last year coming up with an amazing board, amazing plan and amazing action items to make sure they address these issues in your Town,” Berry told Council.

He then presented them with an official affiliate certificate.

“This group is already talking about what they’re doing next,” he said. “We’re excited about the work they’re going to do.”

The Keep Fort Mill Beautiful committee is dedicated to educating the community about natural resource conservation, solid waste handling, recycling, litter abatement and beautification. The group has already helped create pollinator gardens in Harris and Steele Street parks, spearheaded American Recycles Day and hosted litter pickups throughout Town.
