National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week – 2026

In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we recognize and thank the dedicated telecommunicators who serve our community and support public safety efforts each and every day.

At the Fort Mill Police Department, our Telecommunications team plays a critical role in everything we do. They are the calm voice on the other end of the line during someone’s worst moments, providing reassurance while gathering vital information. At the same time, they ensure our officers have accurate, timely details to respond effectively and safely.

Our telecommunicators work behind the scenes, often without recognition, but their impact is felt in every call for service and every successful outcome. Their professionalism, composure, and commitment to service are essential to maintaining the safety of our community.

We are proud of the work they do and grateful for their dedication—not just this week, but every day.

🚧Traffic Pattern Change Planned for S.C. 160 on April 8-12🚧

Drivers should be aware of new traffic patterns along S.C. 160 from April 8-12 due to continuing construction work in the area of I-77 and its interchange with S.C. 160. The contractor, United Blythe Joint Venture (UBJV), will be closing lanes in both the westbound and eastbound lanes of S.C. 160 near Exit 85 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day during this work.

Message boards will be placed around the work zone to inform the public of lane closures and traffic shifts, and officers will be present each night. The new traffic patterns will allow for the construction of a wider bridge across I-77. Drivers should use caution when traveling in this area and expect possible traffic delays. Thank you for your patience during this work.

A Helping Hand at River Trail Elementary

On Wednesday morning during school drop-off at River Trail Elementary, a parent discovered she had a flat tire and wasn’t sure what to do.

Fortunately, School Resource Officer Chris Truesdale was nearby and quickly stepped in to help. With assistance from Chris Trotter from the school’s maintenance team, the two located the spare tire, changed it, and even added air to the spare so the parent could safely drive to a nearby shop.

The parent later shared her appreciation, noting how stressful the situation was and how grateful she was for their willingness to jump in and help.

Moments like this are a reminder that our officers and community partners are always ready to lend a hand.

Thank you to Officer Truesdale and Mr. Trotter for taking the time to help a member of our community when she needed it most.

The Fort Mill Police Department was honored to visit members of the Young Men’s Service League at a Fort Mill School District campus on Sunday, March 1, for an engaging and impactful session with Officer Neubia.

Drawing on his 24 years of law enforcement experience across multiple agencies, and his current role as School Resource Officer at Fort Mill High School, Officer Neubia spoke with students about critical issues affecting teens today.

He addressed internet safety, including the risks of posting inappropriate content, ways to protect yourself online, and the very real dangers of sexting and sextortion, issues that have unfortunately impacted students this year. He also discussed cyberbullying and the serious, long-term consequences that can result from poor decisions made online.

At the Fort Mill Police Department, we are proud of the leadership our School Resource Officers provide both on and off campus. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Young Men’s Service League and Fort Mill School District to help equip young people with the knowledge they need to make safe, responsible decisions.

🚨 FORT MILL DRIVERS — SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER 🚨

Every year, thousands of crashes happen along the shoulder of roadways — many involving first responders working to help someone in need.

In South Carolina, the Move Over Law requires drivers to:

➡ Move over to the next lane away from a stopped emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights, when it is safe to do so.
⬇ If you cannot move over, you must slow down significantly and proceed with caution.

🚗 What about a two-lane road?

On roads with only one lane in each direction (no extra lane to move over):

✔ Slow down well below the posted speed
✔ Increase your following distance
✔ Be prepared to stop if necessary
✔ Watch for responders or stranded motorists near the roadway

If traffic allows and it is safe, you may carefully shift as far away in your lane as possible — but the key requirement is to slow down and proceed cautiously.

This law applies to:
🚓 Law Enforcement
🚒 Fire & Rescue
🚑 EMS
🛻 Tow / Recovery vehicles responding to incidents

Failure to comply can result in a $300–$500 fine — but more importantly, it puts lives at risk.

Our officers and first responders work just feet from moving traffic every day throughout Fort Mill. A simple decision to slow down could save a life.

Slow down. Move over. Protect those who serve.

Update: the suspect is in custody and the situation under control.

There is a large law enforcement presence on Bozeman Drive as Fort Mill officers assist with an incident in the area. Please avoid the area if possible.
