HWY 165 Rail crossing update. 4/29/26
The railroad was unable to secure asphalt to repave the crossing at HWY165 today so they are going to try again tomorrow. If they are able to get the paving completed their plan is to reopen HWY165 Friday morning. I’m sure if I ran a business like they are I wouldn’t be in business long. That being said let’s hope the wait is worth it. Everyone has learned new ways to get around that they weren’t familiar with before all of this rail construction started so there is another benefit, but the lack of coordination and planning on their part really shows.

We are almost through the closing of Gilmore, Bradley, and Owens roads. They will all open back up on Monday when the new paving is completed at the rail crossings. Then on to the big one, HWY 165!! The railroad repairs for HWY 165 will start around 8:00am Tuesday morning and should be finished Wednesday afternoon. Please take time today and tomorrow to plan your route around the construction and road closure now. There will be a lot of traffic on the smaller county roads during the HWY 165 road closure. Please drive carefully and leave early so you will make it to your destination safely.

Latest UPDATE 04/23/26
SR-165 railroad crossing repair has been changed to Tuesday 4/28/26 and Wednesday 4/29/26 and should be opened by Thursday 4/30/26.
Owens Road will be closed Saturday 4/24/26 at 8am and reopen late Monday.
Bradley Road and Gilmore Road will remain closed until late Monday.

SR-165 railroad crossing closing Friday for repairs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The SR-165 railroad crossing in Fort Mitchell will be closed at approximately 8 a.m. Friday, April 24.

The Columbus & Chattahoochee Railroad, Inc., owner of the railroad crossing, will close the section of tracks on SR-165 near Bradley Road to complete repair work.

The crossing is expected to reopen around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28.

SR-165 will be closed to through traffic. In coordination with Russell County, motorists should utilize Bradley Road, Nuckols Road, and Oswichee Road.

Update on burning.

Fire Alert has been issued by the State Forrester.

📢With worsening drought conditions across the state and low relative humidity, State Forester Rick Oates has issued a statewide Fire Alert effective immediately.

Over the past weekend, 50 wildfires burned more than 2,300 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a 500-acre wildfire in Mobile County, one for 412 acres in Coosa County, one for 382 acres in Choctaw County, one for 260 acres in Washington County, and another one for 105 acres in Escambia County.

In the last 30 days, 387 wildfires have burned approximately 15,850 acres of forestland across the state.

“With no measurable rain in sight, the continued extremely dry conditions create dangerous wildfire behavior,” said Oates. “These conditions create the potential for fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer and more of the agency’s firefighting resources to contain. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”

This Fire Alert will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester, at least through Monday, April 20. Conditions will be reevaluated at that time. Permits for outdoor burning will be restricted only to Certified Prescribed Burn Managers. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

Temperatures will fall below freezing tonight across all of Central Alabama with residual moisture on local roadways.
This will lead to the possibility of hazardous travel in some areas.
Black ice may create slick spots on some local roads...bridges and overpasses.
Please use extra caution if you have to travel.
