For at least 400 years, the point of land known as Old Point Comfort that now includes Fort Monroe has served as the key defensive site at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Fort Monroe was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and recognized as the Fort Monroe National Monument through an executive order signed by President Barack Obama in 2011.
