Over the next several months, visitors may notice historic preservation work near Quarters No. 1 and nearby historic buildings. This work supports ongoing efforts to maintain the historic landscape of while addressing safety and access needs.

Non-historic hedges, raised planting beds, and modern fencing around Quarters No. 1, Building #17, and 50 will be removed. These later additions block sidewalks and historic sightlines and were not part of the original landscape.

All groundwork will use low impact techniques and will be monitored by a National Park Service archeologist to ensure protection of any archeological resources.

Preservation work is also underway on historic porches at Quarters No. 1 and Building #50. At Quarters No. 1, the two-story porch facing the will be repaired using materials and details that match the historic design. Decorative features will be preserved where possible and replicated where missing.
