Fort Montgomery was the scene of a fierce Revolutionary War battle for control of the Hudson River. Visitors today can tour the remains of the 14-acre fortification, perched on a cliff overlooking the magnificent Hudson. On October 6, 1777, British, Loyalist and Hessian forces attacked Fort Montgomery and nearby Fort Clinton. The defending American Patriots, outnumbered 3 to 1, fought desperately until driven out of their forts at the points of the enemy bayonets. More than half of the Patriot forces were killed, wounded or captured. Visitors can learn about this important military post at the site's museum, which showcases original artifacts and weapons, large scale models of the fort and the attack, highly detailed mannequins frozen in poses of battle, and an action packed fifteen minute movie of the 1777 assault. Archeologists have revealed many of Fort Montgomery's remains, including stone foundations of barracks, the gunpowder magazine and eroded redoubt walls. There is a spectacular view of the Hudson River from the Grand Battery, where reproduction cannon stand guard and are occasionally fired by the fort's staff. The past comes alive at Fort Montgomery with living history demonstrations of artillery, musketry, music and camp life activities.

Bitter Farewell: The Esopus Indians & The American Revolution

The American Revolution was a time of major upheaval for Native communities in the Hudson Valley. The destruction of war would ultimately force them out of their ancestral homelands. This presentation by ethnoecologist Justin Wexler will tell the dramatic story of the Catskill Mountains' Esopus Indian residents and their neighbors during this turbulent period by weaving together an array of archival sources and little-known oral histories.

Join us tomorrow October 10th for more Fall fun at Fort Montgomery's Fall Festival. There will be c***r pressing, tours of the fort's garden, 18th century cooking and a presentation on 18th century food preservation lead by Tom Hunt.

Our event is FREE and welcoming to all ages.

Our hours are from 10am-4pm.

Join us on Sunday, October 18th at 11am and learn about Ironworking in the Hudson Highlands.

During the time of the 18th century 14 percent of all the world’s wrought iron was being produced in the American colonies. In this lecture come and learn about the rich history of ironworking and iron production in the Hudson Highlands. Learn how items like the chain that cross the Hudson were created, see historic pieces/artifacts, and experience a live blacksmithing demonstration. All ages are welcome.

Twin Forts Day is only a week away! Come commemorate the 249th anniversary of the battle of Fort Montgomery and Clinton. There will be scheduled canon and musket firings. As well as blacksmithing, wool spinning, 18th century games, tabletop wargaming, and military drill ongoing throughout the day.

Join the Fort Montgomery Battle Site Association on Saturday, October 3rd as they commemorate the 249th anniversary of the battle! In addition to the reenactors from the 5th New York Regiment, there will also be: 18th century craft presenters, Cannon firings with Mott's Artillery Company, Musket firings, Military Music ongoing throughout the day!

Please Note there will be NO BATTLE REENACTMENT.

Program is FREE and Family Friendly!

Cannon Firings at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM at the Grand Battery!

Historic Dramatic Performance by Drama from the Past at 1PM!
