Last night was a great night to be a Fort Morgan Police Officer. Four new officers were part of a ceremonial badge pinning a swearing-in ceremony. It was a proud moment for these new officers, their families, and the entire law enforcement community.

Mayor Lindell was on hand to welcome these officers to the Fort Morgan community and said a few words before they were sworn in and had badges pinned on their chests. Three of the officers who were sworn in during this ceremony have previously been introduced as they recently graduated from the police academy. They include: Officer Robert Martinez, Officer Valery Agosto, and Officer Joseph Mueggenberg (left to right). Officer Mike Zordani was also sworn in as the newest member of the department. He began working for FMPD last week, and we will introduce you to him soon.

Please help us in congratulating and welcoming our newest officers to the City of Fort Morgan!

The Fort Morgan Police Department received a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) regarding Richard Lara (34 Years old) involving child po*******hy. A search warrant and an arrest warrant were executed on June 3, and Lara was arrested on 1 charge of S*xual Exploitation of a Child and was advised by a judge later in the afternoon. He was given a $50k cash/surety bond at advisement. This case is ongoing and may lead to further charges.

Richard Lara is a registered s*x offender with a 2017 conviction for a similar crime.

*All charges are simply an accusation by law enforcement, and all parties must be presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

ICAC cases often require a significant amount of time to fully investigate. This is because that they can take time to get search warrant information returned from internet providers, to determine who is using a specific IP address to downoad or upload illegal content, Once the inforamation is returned, the police narrow down on a suspect and all computers, phones, and other digital evidence that may be capabe of sending or receiving these messages, must be seized and forensically reviewed (often at a lab) for evidence. Only after the illegal content is located and the owner/possessor of the information is identified, is an arrest warrant sought.

The Fort Morgan Police Department has two investigators who are assigned to work all drug investigations and child po*******hy cases that come through our department.

To be fully transparent with the community, the Fort Morgan Police Department is releasing the Monthly Crime Report. While we continue with the weekly blotter, this report shows some overall numbers of activities that show the proactive police work happening each month.

For context, each of the numbers in this report represents something specific. The numbers mean the following:

• Calls for Service – represents all calls that officers respond to or initiate. This includes all the numbers in this report, plus many more.

• Traffic Contacts – represents all contacts with a motor vehicle for a traffic violation.

• Community Policing – represents meaningful interactions with members of the public that are self-initiated by the officer. This does not include interactions as part of any call or routine activity. It is most often a call generated by the officer for business contacts, interactions with kids playing, talking to members of the public, etc.

• Tickets – represents all tickets written for any violation. This could include traffic contacts, dog at large, theft, or even drugs (when misdemeanor amounts are possessed). Many other things are included, which may result in a person being physically arrested or released on a summons.
• Misdemeanor Arrest– represents physical arrests in which at least one individual on the call was transported to the detention center on misdemeanor charges.

• Felony Arrest – represents a physical arrest in which at least one individual on the call was transported to the detention center on felony charges.

• DUI/DUID – represents the number of people arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (or both).

Please join us for a blood drive. This isn’t just ANY blood drive; this is a competition between the police and the fire departments to see who can get the most people to show up!

We all know “everyone loves a firefighter”. What we don’t know is why. In competition, everyone wants to be 1st, not 2nd! Yet day in and day out, the police arrive 1st, making it safe so the firefighters can do their thing (in 2nd place). Maybe it is the calendars (they do put out great calendars), or maybe it is because they are great cooks, but let me tell you a secret. They aren’t born great cooks, they learn that while sitting around the fire hall waiting for the next call to come in, while the cops are keeping the fire hall safe so they can get to that call.

I know they get to play a lot of video games at work, so maybe they can interact with the gamers, and that makes them cool! All while the police officers are out there trying to arrest the thieves who are trying to steal the gaming system. I don’t know what the reason is, but this is where we need YOUR help!

Please donate blood on June 4th at the Fort Morgan American Legion between 9:30am and 1:30pm. When you go there, go toward the police (if they aren’t all out taking calls) and give us some love for once. Let those firefighters know that even if everyone loves them, we can be cool too. Unless they are handing out those calendars, then maybe you should go get one of those.

Of course, we love the firefighters too. We have a great deal of respect for what they do and love the interactions we have with them. We are fortunate to have such a great group of people who put so much into the fire department. This is all fun, but for a great cause! Wait…..maybe I should have been a firefighter!

From the desk of Chief Sharp:

On Friday, the Fort Morgan Police Department issued a press release about an incident that occurred at the carwash in the 500 block of West Platte Avenue. The post was put out after several rumors that involved this department being involved in immigration arrests. The fact is that the photos of our officers and other officers in the area were involved in the arrest of an individual who was wanted by the U.S. Marshall’s Office and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. Due to the circumstances of that incident, our office was unaware of the incident until after the arrest was made. During the arrest, there was a lot of loud noise and commotion that would likely cause concern for people in the area and we would have normally notified the community of such incidents as they occurred. Since we were unaware of the incident, a release was made to keep the community informed.

As a result of that post, many people made assumptions, accusations, and attacked others for their political beliefs. I want to be clear: nowhere in that post did it say we would not, do not, or have never assisted ICE or any other law enforcement agency. In my 31 years with the Fort Morgan Police Department, it has always been the policy of this agency to assist each and every law enforcement agency whether local, state, or federal, when requested. I am not aware of one single incident in which we have not aided when asked. In fact, Friday was a good example of us assisting both the federal and local authorities after they made an arrest, but utilizing our K9, where drugs were found and an arrest for those charges was made.

We often work with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and have made several cases with their assistance, one within the past few months. These cases always involve individuals who are involved in the distribution of illegal drugs or child po*******hy. We have never been requested by HSI to assist in any immigration policy violations, unless other criminal laws of the state have also been violated.

A few months ago, I made a statement about our officers not arresting individuals based on immigration status alone. This is not a political statement but based on the fact that we have no authority to arrest anyone for federal law violations alone. If ICE wants an individual, they have the right and ability to pick up anyone that they deem to be violating laws. As Sheriff Martin stated in his statement regarding the county being called a sanctuary county, if they don’t pick them up, they are “released per Colorado law”. This is because the law does not allow a county jail to hold any prisoner for immigration policies alone. If we even tried to take a person to the jail on an immigration hold only, we would be turned away as the law doesn’t allow the county to hold that person without other criminal charges. Furthermore, there is no facility that we, as a police agency, can take an individual for such violations.

Let me be clear: the Fort Morgan Police Department will always cooperate with any and all law enforcement agencies to enforce all laws. We have sworn an oath to enforce all local and state laws while following the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of Colorado. We do not believe in doing anything to prohibit or interfere with any law enforcement partner from meeting their legal requirements. At the same time, we will enforce all laws of which we have legal authority and have not been deemed unconstitutional by the courts of the United States, whether we agree or disagree with the law, just as intended by our founding fathers.

Police agencies should not be political. Our job is to enforce the laws as written by the legislative branch of government and upheld by the judicial branch. That is what we strive to do as part of our oath. I strongly urge all the people of Fort Morgan to be heard at the ballot box, not bashing each other on social media. If you don’t agree with the law as written, you have the power to change them! It is important that we all follow the rule of law; this includes the police and the citizens. We are fortunate to live in the greatest country on earth and must work together, through all branches of government to make it the best it can be!

The Fort Morgan Police Department has been made aware of a rumor that we are assisting ICE in arrests if Fort Morgan. The rumor is due to police presence in the 500 block of West Platte Avenue, this morning. This has nothing to do with ICE, but was an arrest of a suspect by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and US Marshall’s Office that started in Logan County this morning. The suspect was observed leaving the Logan County area and was followed. An arrest was made when the suspect drove into the carwash, as this was a good tactical position for the officers involved.

FMPD was not involved in the incident and was not made aware of this until after the arrest occurred, as it was not planned to be done here. Once the arrest was made, our K9 was brought in to assist as well as our officers. The investigation into the vehicle is ongoing, but it has nothing to do with an ICE arrest.

Every once in a while, (ok. often) we run across a case that makes us go hmmmm, 🤔🤔🤔WTF (Why The Foolishness?). Today, I am going to teach you what NOT 🚫 to do if you don't want to get arrested, so listen up.

Tinting your windows may be legal if it allows enough light in the car, but tinting the windshield is not a good idea. The law does allow you to tint it on the top 4" of the windshields, but officers often find people who can't measure and tint the whole thing. I don't know why they do this; the sun doesn't shine all the time, and the tint makes it harder to see when it is dark🌚🌒🌓. The bet around the office is that people who do this think they are ugly and don't want others to see them (we don't judge, but it is apparent they are trying to hide something). Anyway, when you tint the entire windshield, you provide job security for an officer who has been granted, by your decision, the right to activate the red and blue lights to contact you.🚓🚓🚓

When an officer is behind you and those pretty flashing lights come on, you should pull over and stop🛑 immediately. Even if you don’t think you did anything wrong, you know your rights, or they just always “pick” on you. Your best bet is to pull over and see what the officer has to say.

Last weekend, an FMPD officer contacted a guy with illegally tinted windows and an inability to measure 4” on the windshield.🤦‍♂️ He did exactly what I just said you should do. What he apparently didn’t know, however, is that when you do stop, you should not have open alcohol containers in the back seat, ma*****na and joints in the front seat, and a restraining order preventing you from those things. Once the officer sees this stuff in plain view, you just gave them the right to put you in handcuffs, and these actions will likely lead to a search of your vehicle.

If you forgot about the restraining order, alcohol, and w**d, you are already in trouble, but unless you are like this guy, there is still a chance to get away with a ticket.📋 Here is where you want to make sure you aren’t doing what this guy did! Don’t 🚫 carry your f***y pack on the passenger seat with a winter mask, “brass knuckles”, and baggies of co***ne. On top of that, don’t bring a loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine and large sums of cash. When you do these things, you are more than likely to be taken to county jail🚔 on some charges that may impact your job, family, and freedom for a while⏳.

I know what you are thinking: why doesn’t the FMPD command staff have tinted windshields? If anybody should be ashamed, it should be them! Well, let me tell you something, our command staff has self-confidence, and so should you!🤝🤝

On the afternoon of May 8, 2025, the Fort Morgan Police Department received information that a male party. Chad Sindelar, 37 of Greeley, was heading to the Fort Morgan area, and he had a $500,000 cash-only bond out of Jefferson County. The pending warrant from Jefferson County was for: distribution of controlled substances (DF1, DF1, DF2, DF3) and possession of a weapon by a previous offender (F5). He also had a $1000 PR bond out of Weld County for drug paraphernalia and driving under restraint.

Sindelar was observed driving in the 600 Block of Lincoln and saw officers converging on him. He quickly jumped from his car and began running. A detective was able to catch up to him and get him to the ground, but Sindelar was able to get up and continue running.

Based on the location and the time of day, officers surrounded the area to keep Sindelar in the area, rather than chasing him toward a school that was in session. After setting up a perimeter, officers began canvassing the neighborhood and discovered that Sindelar had made his way into a nearby residence of an innocent bystander who was present with her two children. Sindelar threatened and attempted to bribe the individuals in the home before leaving.

Fort Morgan Police Detectives applied for an arrest warrant for Sindelar on numerous charges, including:
• Second degree burglary (F4)
• Criminal Extortion (F4)
• Menacing (M1)
• Obstructing a peace officer (M2)
• Driving after revocation prohibited (MT2)
• Expired registration (TIB)

On May 23, 2025, Chad Sindelar was located at his home in Greeley and barricaded himself inside. He was taken into custody by the local police agency on warrants from Jefferson County, Weld County, and Morgan County.

*All charges are simply an accusation by law enforcement, and all parties must be presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
