In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced the pinwheel as the new national symbol for child abuse prevention through Pinwheels for Prevention®. By its very nature, the pinwheel connotes whimsy and childlike notions. In essence, it has come to serve as the physical embodiment, or reminder, of the great childhoods we want for all children.

The Pinwheels for Prevention® campaign provides a unique opportunity for all of us, individuals and organizations alike, to take action by learning more about prevention, supporting child and family friendly policies and services, and volunteering at the local, state, and national levels.

Did someone help you have a great childhood when you were young – perhaps a parent, sibling, teacher or coach? Do you help children in your life today have a great childhood – your own kids, nephews or nieces, or maybe children you mentor or babysit?

Throughout April, celebrate the lives you touch and those who have touched yours by honoring them with a pinwheel – the national symbol for the great childhoods all children deserve because our children are our future. #GrowingBetterTogether

Our SANE Coordinator had the opportunity to attend an Advanced Course on Strangulation Prevention in Wilsonville, OR! This training is the most comprehensive training on strangulation in the country and led by 3 of the top experts in the field of strangulation.

Some take-always our SANE/ SANE coordinator had as a result of this training:

“Strangulation facts I learned:
🔴Men who kill police officers often have a history of strangling women ( FBI Analysis of Officers Killed in the Line of Duty in 2019: 16% of known offenders had a prior DV arrest).
🔴Majority of women in America who are murdered are shot – strangulation is not meant to kill, it is meant to send the message to the victim “I CAN kill you” #lastwarningshot
🔴When women leave a strangler, the strangler becomes a stalker.
🔴Victims of strangulation are 1000% more likely of becoming a homicide victim – usually they are shot by their partner – and are more likely to be sexually assaulted.
And I learned SO MUCH MORE!!!”

We are always learning and continuing our education here at SARA and opportunities such as these allow our staff to develop their professional skills and expertise in the field we work in. This helps us educate our community partners and enact social change within our communities.

♥️ Meet our new mascot! Just kidding, we wish we could keep Hope in house but alas she’s all about the great outdoors, but we did get a chance to cuddle this little love bug today at SARA House. ♥️

Some much needed baby goat therapy provided by our SANE nurse and coordinator, Deb. She breeds goats, makes soap and some delicious ice cream from their milk. Trust us, goat ice cream 🍦is actually really tasty! Oh the joys of living in rural Colorado! 👩‍🌾🐄🐐🐖🐓

Hope reminds us that we need to take time to enjoy the little and cute things in life, whether that be taking a break, petting a cutie like her, or even taking a mid-morning stretch.

Caring for ourselves is important and sometimes it just takes a little slow down to hold a baby goat. Thank you Deb for sharing this little gem with us! In the meantime, share with us what your little slow downs look like, we always love new ideas!

MCC’s Student Nursing Association (SNA) presented SARA House with a check for $363 to help fund local work to support victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. SNA student representative, Mikayla Ocanas, initiated a penny war competition between 1st and 2nd year nursing students to raise funds and awareness of the local charity. "SARA House was our charity of choice because as future nurses, SARA House has helped us understand the importance of our role to provide care to sexual assault or domestic violence victims." #nursing #createimpact
