Being a coparent means that conflicts will arise, whether they are about your child, your relationship, or something else. Many parents wonder whether they should air disagreements in front of their young children. The answer is more complicated than you may think.

You don’t have to avoid arguments in front of your young child, but make sure that exposure to stress is minimal. Keep things civil and see the situation through your child’s eyes. Tara & Evy provide an amazing example of how to talk to very young kiddos about body safety, boundaries, and when to tell. Teaching kids body autonomy is a protective and a powerful tool that they’ll carry even into adulthood regarding consent, boundaries, and safety.

With school threats being more prevalent today than ever before, we would like to invite you to the last Chat with the Chief of the year. Next Wednesday, December 14th, Chief Sharp will be joined by a special guest of the Fort Morgan School District, Superintendent Rob Sanders. During this presentation, you will hear how the police and school district work together to protect OUR children. We will discuss the steps that both entities take, in unison, to investigate threats and make sure the school is safe before kids are welcomed into the school.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about what we do in these situations. Understanding the depth of the investigation, the response to these calls, and the steps taken to ensure that we have a safe environment may help you sleep better at night! We all take school safety very seriously and this is your chance to hear what we do in these situations.

SPD OFFERS HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Halloween is a fun time of year, children get to dress up and enjoy treats from those in our neighborhoods. Making sure everyone is safe is the number one priority for the Sterling Police Department. In the spirit of safety, the Sterling Police Department will have extra officers on duty during Halloween and we also provide the following safety tips to help make this Halloween safe and enjoyable for all.

TRICK OR TREATING SAFETY TIPS:
• Children should accept treats only at the doorway. Never enter a stranger’s home. Never invite children to enter your home.
• Don’t be distracted by your cell phone or other device, keep your head up.
• Children should never accept rides from strangers.
• Children should never take short cuts through backyards or alley ways.
• Set a time limit for your children to be out on Halloween night.
• Children should travel in groups of 3-5 people.
• Adults should es**rt children while they trick-or-treat.
• Adults and children should carry flashlights if possible.
• Children should not eat treats until a responsible adult has done a thorough inspection, especially of homemade treats.
• All fruit should be discarded unless you know the source is safe.
• Keep pets inside your home, or another safe place, on Halloween night.
• Children should walk and never run during trick-or-treating.
• Parents should know what route their children are taking within the neighborhood.
• All costumes should be made of light colored, fire-proof, preferably reflectorized material.
• Props such as toy guns or swords should be made of pliable material.
• Realistic replica fi****ms should NEVER be used.
• Masks should only be worn if they are properly fitted and provide unobstructed breathing and visibility.
• Children should always use sidewalks and not the streets for walking.
• Children should look in all directions before crossing the street.

DRIVING SAFETY TIPS:
• Motorists should also do their part in making Halloween safe for children. Make sure to drive cautiously, to include driving below the posted speed limit while traveling on neighborhood streets during trick or treat hours.
• Avoid talking on a cell phone or other distracting activities. Remember, excited children may dart out into traffic at any time without warning. Drive with your headlights on even during the daylight trick or treat hours so your vehicle is more visible to children.

Additionally, there are two safe alternatives to trick-or-treating offered through the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Sterling. “Trick or Treat Street on Main Street” with the downtown merchants is TODAY, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. If attending please follow the arrows as there will be one direction of foot traffic on the sidewalks. The City of Sterling’s Trick or Treating event which will be at the Rec Center again will be on Halloween, Monday, October 31st from 4-7pm.

The Sterling Police Department wishes everyone a happy and safe Halloween!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the 'Day of Unity' in October 1981 observed by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to
end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national levels. The activities conducted were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.” -- From “Domestic Violence Awareness Month
History” by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, who adapted it from NCADV’s 1996 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Resource Manual
